- the kids had to be able to explain it – let alone pronounce it;
- it had to be USDA organic;
- packaging had to be convenient – for little kids’ hands, for busy parents’ hands, and for retailers;
- the packaging had to avoid resource-sapping production, shipment, storage and disposal methods, and ultimately:
- it had to strike that ideal balance by providing tasty treats that make economic sense for everyone involved.
Although the site recommends Smashies for those 5 and older because of the cap on the pouch, you can still give it to a child younger than 5—just assist with the cap if needed and make sure to keep it out of your child’s reach.
DS is much younger than 5, so I simply twisted the cap off for him and kept it out of his reach. Before he tasted it, I wanted to give it a try, and I thought it tasted really good. Of course the true test would be with DS. Well, he just slurped up the Smashies so quickly he actually wanted more! I did have to help him squeeze it at times since he’s still quite young, but I know older kids would be able to manage just fine on their own.
I love the fact that the Smashies come in such a convenient package—no spoon needed, is organic, there’s no added sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or preservatives, and is very tasty!
You can currently get a Smashies 10 pack Trade Sampler for $14.99 (covers shipping and handling) through their website. Right now the only flavor available is Snappy Apple, but they will be coming out with 3 more flavors by year’s end and 3 more by next summer.
The Smashies were truly a “smash hit” with DS, and I can’t wait to see what flavors they come out with next!
