I love ketchup. I can’t have fries (or hash browns or turkey bacon or onion rings or…) without it. However, I know it’s high in sugar. Also, I recently read in a magazine how organic varieties of ketchup have a higher lycopene content. Therefore, when I got a chance to sample Wholemato Organic Agave Ketchup, I couldn’t wait! According to the website, Wholemato Organic Agave Ketchup originated “out of an interest to share incredibly tasty food products our friends and family loved, and in an organic way. With our heritage in the south, over 60 combined years of herb and vegetable gardening experience, over 15 combined years of restaurant and professional food preparation experience and concern about the health of the world’s population and the world itself, the foundation for Wholemato was laid.”
I personally never heard of agave before, and I was interested to find out why agave was used as one of the ingredients. Also from the website: “We were exposed to the gift of agave nectar at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Driven by a concern about Diabetes and sugar induced hyperactivity, organic agave nectar became a perfect substitute for our sweetening needs. We are proud to be offering an Organic Agave Ketchup that rates only seven on the glycemic index! Ketchup elevates so many of our favorite foods to higher levels, so why not do so in a healthy way.”
I tried the Original Wholemato Organic Agave Ketchup on a veggie sausage breakfast sandwich.
I haven’t used regular ketchup since.
Wholemato was a bit sweeter than regular ketchup, but it was also very tasty--it's a lot more flavorful than regular ketchup. Wholemato contains organic tomato puree, organic cider vinegar, organic agave nectar, salt, organic onion powder, a blend of organic herbs and spices, citric acid, organic garlic powder. Compared to the other, non-organic ketchup that was already in my fridge which contains high fructose corn syrup and corn syrup as two of its ingredients, which ketchup do you think I’m going to be using from now on?
Wholemato Organic Agave Ketchup retails for about $5.29 a bottle and you can check the Wholemato website to find a retailer near you.
The Ketchup also comes in a Spicy flavor, and next year they will be launching an Exotic flavor!
