Terra Tees

I love featuring eco-friendly companies, especially mom-owned and operated companies! Terra Tees is one such company—mom-owned and eco-friendly—that offers some cute organic clothing.

According to their website, Terra Tees began when owner Missy Willis “honed in on clothes for kids as a way to spread an environmental message. What better messengers then the little people who will have to deal with the problems older generations leave behind?" She states "Our clothing is 'of the earth', made with 100% organic cotton, our designs aim to encourage others to care for the Earth, and we donate a portion of all profits to organizations who support our environment, which in turn creates a healthier place for us all to live.”

Terra Tees currently offers organic clothing in 3 adorable designs which are printed using low impact, water-based dyes that are PVC and phthalate free, and they have more designs on the way! Their clothing is natural in color, making it perfect for both little boys and little girls.

Ciao

Both DH & I are looking for a new cell phone, so when I found out about Ciao, a new “multi-million-strong online community that critically reviews and rates millions of products and services for the benefit of other consumers,” through the Family Review Network, I thought the timing couldn’t be better.

At Ciao, you can find hundreds and hundreds of reviews on electronics, video games, movies, and so much more. The site is very easy to navigate, and you can browse by category, popularity, or rating, and you can also search by key word, price, brand, or features. It’s really easy to narrow down your options to find exactly what you want. Once you find what you’re looking for, you can read the reviews to help you make your purchasing decision.

By joining Ciao, you can also post your own reviews, including video reviews! Ciao even pays its members $1 per qualifying review. What a great way to earn extra cash!

***THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED***

KINeSYS

DS goes through a lot of sunscreen. We normally use sunscreen lotions or sticks, but I was recently able to try out a sunscreen spray from KINeSYS, thanks to the Family Review Network.

According to the KINeSYS website, “countless tests and trials have led to the KINeSYS line of Performance Sunscreens, which exceed the requirements of professional athletes and active individuals regardless of skill or age.”

I received two samples from KINeSYSFunscreen SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray for Kids and SPF 30 Girl Sunscreen Spray.

Since I received it, I have been using the Funscreen SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray ($6.00 for a 1 oz. bottle) on DS every single day. The KINeSYS website has a demo video you can watch to ensure proper application. The sunscreen spray is quick and simple to use--I spray it on DS’s arms, legs, neck and ears, and for his face, I spray the sunscreen on my hands first and then apply it to his face. Because the sunscreen is sprayed on, it literally took just a few seconds to get DS protected, especially since you don’t even need to rub it on the skin—it dries on its own.

Since I’m the only “girl” in the house, I’ve been using the SPF 30 Girl Sunscreen Spray ($18.00 for 4 oz. bottle; $6.00 for 1 oz. size available soon). I like that it comes in a green tea and vanilla fragrance. Sweet smelling sun protection--how cool!

The KINeSYS Funscreen Sunscreen Spray and Girl Sunscreen Spray provide Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB protection and are:

• 100% Preservative-free
• Oil-free / Alcohol-free / PABA-free
• Water-resistant / Sweat-resistant
• Hypoallergenic / Non-comedogenic

What else do I love about KINeSYS? They care about the environment! According to their website, “Our bottles are 100% recyclable High Density Polyethylene (Bisphenol-A free). We shun excess packaging whenever possible and when necessary we use cardboard that is a minimum of 40% post-consumer recycled board. We do not use ingredients that accumulate in the body or the environment and print using vegetable-based inks when available. We source locally as much as possible to reduce fuel use.”

KINeSYS is definitely on my must-have sunscreen list. If you, your spouse, or your children are constantly outdoors, I highly recommend KINeSYS sunscreen sprays not only because of how safe they are (rated amongst some of the safest according to the Environmental Working Group), but because of its ease of use. We all know how busy day to day life can get, and it takes just a few seconds to get much needed sun protection with KINeSYS.

Thank you to KINeSYS for providing the product(s) for review and/or giveaway.

Recycline

I think recycling is one of the easiest things you can do to help the environment. I’ve seen many items made out of recycled products, but it wasn’t until I heard about Recycline, maker of the Preserve line, did I realize how many practical items for your home could be made out of recycled plastic!

According to their website, “Recycline makes Preserve® -- a line of stylish, high performance, eco-friendly products for your home. As a company, we strive to combine socially and environmentally responsible business practices with groundbreaking design to create products that people feel good about having in their homes. We believe that choosing eco-friendly products doesn’t mean having to sacrifice quality, price, or performance. We believe they should make you feel good.”

I received a Preserve Cutting Board made out of 100% recycled plastic from Recycline to try out. It worked just as well as any other cutting board I’ve used before. It's sturdy, and has a nice, curved handle to transfer food easily. It’s dishwasher safe, BPA free, and recyclable if you live in a community that recycles #5 plastics (if you don't live in such a community, Recycline has a great program called Gimme 5, in which you can learn more about how to recycle #5 plastics).

The Preserve line also offers other kitchen items, as well as personal care and tableware products.

Recycline has generously donated a small (10” x 8”) Ripe Tomato (red) Preserve Cutting board and 25 coupons worth $3 (3 coupons for $1 off each the purchase of the following: a Preserve Triple Razor or 4 Pack of Triple Razor Replacement Blades; Two Preserve or Preserve Jr. Toothbrushes; Any Pack of Preserve Tableware—expiration date of 3/31/09). If you’d like to win the cutting board and/or get a coupon, here’s what you need to do:

Coupons: Simply email me if you’d like a coupon (my email can be found in the Contact section) with the subject Recycline-Preserve Coupon. It’s first come, first serve. I’ll reply back to the first 24 to get their mailing address. Once the supply has been depleted, I’ll update this post to state “coupons no longer available.”

***THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED***

Congratulations to DOODLEGIRL!

Giveaway: One lucky winner will win a small 10”x8” Ripe Tomato Preserve cutting board (valued at $5.50) in addition to the $3 worth of coupons.
  • To enter, visit Recycline and leave a comment on which of the products you like the best.

Review: Smashies

DS loves applesauce. We are constantly buying individually packaged containers of applesauce (instead of the big jar). Unfortunately, where we usually go grocery shopping, they don’t carry organic applesauce. When I had the opportunity to review Smashies--organic apple sauce in a pouch--I thought that what such a neat idea!

According to their website, these were the requirements for Smashies:
  • the kids had to be able to explain it – let alone pronounce it;
  • it had to be USDA organic;
  • packaging had to be convenient – for little kids’ hands, for busy parents’ hands, and for retailers;
  • the packaging had to avoid resource-sapping production, shipment, storage and disposal methods, and ultimately:
  • it had to strike that ideal balance by providing tasty treats that make economic sense for everyone involved.

Although the site recommends Smashies for those 5 and older because of the cap on the pouch, you can still give it to a child younger than 5—just assist with the cap if needed and make sure to keep it out of your child’s reach.

DS is much younger than 5, so I simply twisted the cap off for him and kept it out of his reach. Before he tasted it, I wanted to give it a try, and I thought it tasted really good. Of course the true test would be with DS. Well, he just slurped up the Smashies so quickly he actually wanted more! I did have to help him squeeze it at times since he’s still quite young, but I know older kids would be able to manage just fine on their own.

I love the fact that the Smashies come in such a convenient package—no spoon needed, is organic, there’s no added sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or preservatives, and is very tasty!

You can currently get a Smashies 10 pack Trade Sampler for $14.99 (covers shipping and handling) through their website. Right now the only flavor available is Snappy Apple, but they will be coming out with 3 more flavors by year’s end and 3 more by next summer.

The Smashies were truly a “smash hit” with DS, and I can’t wait to see what flavors they come out with next!

Giveaway, Review: Alchemilla

Do you ever hear how some people comment that a pregnant woman’s skin is “glowing?” Well, my skin is glowing, but not because of the pregnancy--it’s because of some wonderful products I was able to sample thanks to Alchemilla.

According to their website, Alchemilla is “committed to creating non-toxic, truly active organic skin care products that naturally and ethically guide skin back to health and deliver their promise of a more healthy, vitalized, youthful looking complexion…Our superior antioxidant-rich formulations deeply nourish skin, support cellular health, strengthen natural restorative processes and help maintain the optimal environment for proper skin function, thus promoting skin's long term health.”

I was able to try out the following products:

  • Antioxidant Concentrate Serum: It was very, very light; I love how it keeps my skin hydrated and protects it; I only wish I had more so I could continue to use it to see how much of a difference it would make in evening out my skin tone.
  • Rehydrating Day Care Cream: It felt really light and creamy; my face and neck felt soft and smooth all day.
  • Exfoliating Face Wash Cream: I love how my skin felt after I used this; the tiny little jojoba beads really make a difference.
  • Gentle Plant Purifying Masque: The last time I used a mask was years and years ago, and I just remember it making my skin really dry afterwards and peeling it off was a bit torturous. However, the Alchemilla Gentle Plant Purifying Masque was indeed very gentle. It was light enough that I even forgot that I had it on until DS pointed at my face and asked “what dat?” Getting it off was easy—moisten it and rinse it off.
  • Deep Clean Purifying Masque: Just like the Gentle Plant Purifying Masque, this was a very light mask, and was easy to put on and easy to get off. It really felt like it went deep down into my pores to get out all the dirt and oil.

Alchemilla's products are "pure natural, organic, and biodynamic," containing no parabens, sulfates, alcohol or petrochemical biproducts, and the results are practically immediate.

***THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED***

Review, Discount Reminder: Angelina Organic Skincare

A couple of months ago I posted about Angelina Organic Skincare—a company that offers natural and organic skin care products. They offer many different types of products—body washes, massage oils, soaps, creams, toners, and a lot, lot more.

I recently received a generous sampling from their line: The Body Milks smelled really nice and left my skin feeling soft; the Brighten Up! Creamy Face Polish made my face super smooth; the Tea Tree Toner is perfect for both cleansing and tightening; the Geranium Under Eye Cream was exactly what I needed because of my many sleepless nights due to pregnancy-related issues (numerous trips to the bathroom, heartburn, etc.); the Nourishing Herbal Face Cream is awesome because it contains sunscreen; the Skin Doctor is perfect for the skin on my heels which only recently started cracking; and the Sore Muscle Rub, Jojoba Massage Lotion, and Deep Tissue Massage Butter have all come in very handy--for me because of all my aches and pains associated with pregnancy, and for DH too, who works long hours and lots of overtime.

I was very pleased with all of the organic products I tried, but I have to say—my absolute favorites are the scrubs.

The first scrub I tried was the Shea Butter Sugar Scrub ~ Samadhi. According to the website, Samadhi is Sanskrit for “bliss,” and it sure was bliss for my skin! It really felt like I was scrubbing away all the dead skin cells. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt, especially in those really dry areas (like my elbows). I was truly amazed. I couldn’t wait to try out the other scrubs. The Vanilla Aphrodisa and Wildwood worked just as well. The Glow Baby! Apricot Vanilla Exfoliating Creme/Scrub worked wonders too.

Just a reminder--Angelina Organic Skincare is generously offering free shipping or a generous discount:

Free shipping on orders over $100 with code SAGESHIP and selecting the “In Store Pick Up Bend Oregon” shipping option on the REVIEW ORDER page (so no shipping charges will apply); valid for all US except Alaska.

Or

20% discount off purchases with code SAGE20.

Offers cannot be combined with any other discounts, and both offers expire on February 18, 2009.

Visit Angelina Organic Skincare and get some of your holiday shopping done, or better yet--indulge your skin with their scrubs or any of the other great products. Your skin deserves it!

Giveaway, Review: skinnyskinny

I used to use body wash when I showered—just the typical body wash you’d find at any drugstore, but lately I’ve been receiving a lot of great soap samples from different companies and I don’t think I could go back to using those “typical” body washes again. One of the companies I received great soap samples from is skinnyskinny. Clara Williams created skinnyskinny because “there simply weren"t any good soaps.” According to the website: “All skinnyskinny products are made completely by hand from scratch from really great ingredients (extra-virgin oils, unrefined butters and essential oils). Our products contain at least 96% certified organic ingredients.”

As soon as I opened the box of skinnyskinny samples, I immediately thought “these smell really good,” and “I love the packaging.” Along with the soaps, my box of goodies also contained lip balms and bath salts.

I thought the skinnyskinny items were all great. I'm officially a lip balm addict now, and the baths salts--just the fragrance alone relaxes and soothes you! And what's not to love--both the lip balms and bath salts are 100% organic treats for your lips and skin.

My favorite products though, are the soaps. There are so many different varieties, and what I like best is how the different ingredients serve various purposes. I received many different samples, but my favorites are the Real Cocoa (formerly Chocolate), Lime & Mint with Sea Kelp, and the Basil & Mint Shaving Soap. The Real Cocoa was a no brainer—I love anything do with chocolate! And the fact that it contains cocoa butter, which is used to minimize stretch marks, is great, especially with my very large baby bump! The Lime & Mint with Sea Kelp smelled invigorating and I think it’s great that the Sea Kelp helps remove toxins. I thought the Basil & Mint Shaving Soap was neat because I never tried a “shaving soap” before. I tried it on just one leg to see if there would be a difference, and there was. I couldn't tell the difference, however, but DH could! I was pretty impressed!

***THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED***

Congratulations to donna444444!

Giveaway, Review: Paper Shouts

Other than spending time with friends and family and eating lots of yummy food, what I really love about the holidays is receiving holiday cards in the mail, especially photo holiday cards. I love sending them out too. What could be better than sending out holiday cards? Sending out eco-friendly holiday cards!

Paper Shouts, which creates adorable “shouts” for all sorts of occasions—engagements, graduation, holidays, birthdays, and more, has recently gone green! Their website states “As a company, we are committed to being environmentally as well as socially aware. Our move to recycled paper is just the beginning. Starting this month all our designer shouts are printed on 100% PCW recycled, heavyweight (110#), uncoated paper and are shipped with 50% recycled envelopes (30% PCW/20% VF). We are excited to have sourced a premium grade recycled paper so we do not sacrifice any quality in our final product with this move. Our customer can now feel good about sharing their news with family and friends in a very personal way while still being environmentally friendly.”

I received a sampling of their cards, and was impressed with the variety. The cards are sturdy, and of course the designs are beautiful. Their “shouts” are divided into 3 categories--traditional, vintage, and modern designs. I typically lean towards modern designs, but I surprised myself when I discovered the design I liked best out of the samples was a vintage design.

Here’s another of my favorite designs from their site, also vintage.

They are just so classic and timeless.

Wouldn’t you like to spread some eco-friendly holiday cheer to your loved ones this year? You can through Paper Shouts, and they are generously offering both a discount and sponsoring a giveaway.

Discount: Get 10% off using code SageSavvy through December 1, 2008 (cannot be combined with other offers).

Giveaway: Jon McLaughlin OK Now CD

If you watched the Disney movie Enchanted, I’m sure you’ve heard of the Oscar-nominated song “So Close,” which was performed by singer/songwriter Jon McLaughlin at this past year’s Academy Awards ceremony.

According to his bio:

“A great deal has happened to Jon McLaughlin between the release of his debut Island Records album INDIANA last year, and his new, sophomore effort, OK NOW...The [Academy Award] appearance re-ignited INDIANA, spurring a 1,514% overnight sales increase at Amazon, sending it to the #1 spot on its Movers & Shakers chart, and creating solid momentum for his latest release. The single from INDIANA, “Beautiful Disaster” attracted over 420,000 digital fans when featured as Download of The Week.”

Jon’s newly released CD, OK NOW, features the hit single “Beating My Heart.”

I love this single. It’s the kind of song I can picture myself singing to while driving in my car. I really like his style—a bit of pop, a bit of rock, a bit of soul.

30 Days to Natural

I know many people, especially moms, who are trying to become greener, myself included. According to a recent Mom Central survey, “81% of Moms consider themselves to be ‘green.’ However, in many cases, being green puts more pressure on already busy Moms.”

I certainly agree.

Fortunately, Green Works, the wonderful line of natural cleaners by Clorox, created the 30 Days to Natural website, where you can “plant a daisy” and join people all over the country who are trying to live a greener lifestyle. To "plant a daisy," you simply sign up on their website, where you can get a daily green tip. These tips can also be sent to you via email or your mobile phone.

I’m sure everyone already helps make the environment greener in their own way, whether it be through recycling, carpooling, or using power strips to turn off electronics not in use. 30 Days to Natural will send you practical tips to give you even more ideas on how to live a greener lifestyle. A recent tip shared how to “Shop smart. Keep a few reusable shopping bags within easy reach - in your car, purse and office or just near the front door.” This tip is definitely for me—I have several reusable bags but I alwasy forget them. Now, I will make sure to keep one in my purse!

Besides signing up for daily green tips, you can view web videos from moms who are sharing their journey to a greener, more natural lifestyle, join the Green Works Facebook page and connect with others going green, or even upload your own video on the Green Works Facebook page and share your own green journey.

30 Days to Natural is a great site for anyone, no matter what shade of green you are. Start your 30 Days to Natural and plant your daisy today!

Review: PictureItPostage

I recently received a wedding invitation from one of my dearest friends and noticed the stamp was personalized—it was a picture of her and her fiancé. I thought that was a very cute idea. When the Family Review Network presented an opportunity to review PictureItPostage—I couldn’t wait to personalize my very own stamps too!

Their website states “PictureItPostage™ lets you wow friends and family with custom postage designs. Create personalized holiday cards, custom wedding invitations, unique birth announcements and thank you notes that really show you care.”

The entire process was very easy. The only difficult part was deciding what I wanted on the stamps! After much thought, I decided to use one of my favorite photos—one I had posted on a Wordless Wednesday. It’s a photo of Diamond Head with a double rainbow, and it was taken the evening of our wedding day.

As I mentioned, the process of creating your personalized postage is EASY. Once you upload your photo, you can edit the stamp by resizing it, moving the image around, changing the background color or stamp text color, and even changing the format to portrait or landscape. I like how the canvas is quite “large,” so whether you upload a photo or one of your child’s drawings, the image will still look nice and clear, and not grainy or compressed. Once you’re done editing, you select the postage amount and quantity.

That’s it!

PictureItPostage will also be hosting a contest beginning Oct. 31 and going into the holidays called the PictureItPostage "Get Real" Photo contest--they want to see the “best of the worst” when it comes to photos. Simply visit PictureItPostage.com, click on the “Get Real” contest button and upload the best of your worst photos. Beginning November 21, all visitors to the “Get Real” contest website will have a chance to vote for their favorite photos. Two Grand Prizewinners will each receive a new Canon Digital SLR Camera and five PictureItPostage coupon codes good for 100 customized photo stamps. Giveaway, Review: Nimli

I’m a little jealous of DS and “almost-here” DS#2. Why? Because they have a lot of cute clothes from some great eco-friendly companies! To me, it seems as it’s if a lot easier to find eco-friendly apparel for babies and kids than it is for adults, which is why I’m glad to have found Nimli. They offer eco-friendly apparel for everyone—women, men, kids, and even pets!

According to their website, “Nimli is an online retailer devoted to providing natural, organic, and sustainable lifestyle products while embracing style and aesthetic. Nimli offers clothing, accessories, home décor, beauty products and much more from independent designers who combine their effortless creativity with our environmentally conscious ethics. We offer an array of ecologically friendly products that are natural, organic, recycled, sweatshop-free, and cruelty-free. We are firmly aligned with a lifestyle that cultivates a green conscious mind, body, and soul.”

I was able to review samples of a scarf, sash, and bangles from one of the brands that Nimli features—Azuri. Azuri creates beautiful pieces “using the finest natural fabrics, including cashmere, wool & silk. The collection offers a stylish & elegant approach to essential accessories.”

One word came to mind as soon as I saw the pieces from Azuri—GORGEOUS! The bangles are beautifully hand-woven and very stylish. They can be worn to work or a night out on the town. The shawl is just beautiful and would be perfect for both formal and informal occasions. It’s made out of 70% pashmina and 30% silk. The sash, made of 100% silk, is a versatile accessory that can also be used as a scarf, a belt, or headband. Both the shawl and sash come in a variety of colors—you can get one for every day of the week, or one to match your every mood. Their color selection is so extensive you’re bound to find at least one color you love!

Variety is an understatement when it comes to Nimli. Not only does Nimli offer a broad selection of colors and numerous brands, but they also offer many products besides their apparel, such as beauty and wellness products, items for your home, and so much more!

Review: Bethesda Skincare

When it comes to sunscreen, we are very diligent putting in on…our son. Yes, we always make sure to put sunscreen on DS, but when it comes to ourselves, I admit that both DH & I slack a little. I know, “tsk, tsk.” I use sunscreen whenever I go to the park or beach, but I know I need to use it daily since I'm often out running errands or commuting to work. I’ve been noticing for a while that I have a tan line on my left arm--the sun just hits it when I drive. I always tell myself to put on sunscreen…I just never get around to it, or I simply forget to put some on.

Fortunately, I found out about Bethesda Sunscreen Soap through the Family Review Network and couldn’t wait to try it out. I’ve heard of sunscreen in makeup, lip balms, even hair products, but a sunscreen soap? I never knew such a thing existed.

Jamie Collins Doss, founder and creator of Bethesda Skincare, shares her story on her website as to how she developed Bethesda Sunscreen Soap: "Our story starts with my Daddy having skin cancers removed from being out in the sun while working on his farm in Northern Alabama. He refused sunscreen because the smell and the nuisance of applying it. Also, I became very ill and could no longer tolerate traditional soaps, sunscreen or supplement powders. I then decided to work with a combination of natural therapeutic ingredients to add SPF protection to work with the All-One multi-vitamin powder in a soap bar. The skin being the largest organ of the body, why not a therapeutic multi-vitamin SPF soap for the skin that can be used in your routine hot shower, the perfect place where pores are open and receive.”

I’ve been using Bethesda Sunscreen Soap for several days now, and I love it. The soap smells very refreshing. It lathers nicely and moisturizes well. Not only does it provide SPF 10+ sunscreen protection, but it’s all-natural, and contains vitamins to help nourish your skin. I think this soap is such a great idea that I make sure both DH and DS use it too.

Although I would still recommend putting on additional sunscreen with a higher SPF when going to the beach or participating in any other outdoor activity, the sunscreen soap is a wonderful, practical solution for every day sunscreen protection, and is a great product for busy, forgetful mommies like me.

Review: Pondür

I love buying baby clothes. Even before I became a mom, I always enjoyed shopping for friends' babies, browsing through all the cute clothes and adorable designs. I especially like clothes with messages on them. DH likes shirts with funny messages (his favorite shirt we got for DS is “If you think I’m handsome, you should see my daddy"). I, on the other hand, personally like clothing with more endearing messages, which is why I just said “awwwww” when I discovered Pondür.

Pondür was created by Shanna & Christy after asking themselves “what would you do if you weren’t afraid?" Their website states "we spent many years exploring and 'pondür' was finally the answer that encompassed all we desired. 'Pondür' comes from the word 'ponder' in the dictionary. Our clothing line is dedicated to inspiring the world, one tiny thought at a time. We do this by putting thought-provoking/inspirational quotes on 100% certified organic cotton infant tees and creepers. Our unique, environmentally friendly baby apparel not only inspires the little one wearing it but also everyone who sees it.”

I received the Natural Color/Cocoa imprinted creeper with the quote: My footprints may be small but my dreams are big. Isn’t that just sweet? I had a hard time choosing which of Pondür's quotes I wanted on the creeper (they are all so endearing), but ultimately that quote was my favorite.

The creeper is made from 100% certified organic cotton and low impact dyes, and printed with water-based inks. It feels so soft and looks so comfy...I can’t wait to get this cute little creeper on DS#2 once he arrives, and I know the message will make an impression on everyone who sees him in it.

What’s great is that Pondür also donates a percentage of all sales to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta and the Lean on Me Foundation in South Africa.

Visit Pondür if you’re looking for baby apparel that is not only organic, but cute and inspirational. The only problem you may have when visiting their site—it may take a while to “pondür” their selection as their quotes are all so meaningful!

Review: Then She Found Me

It’s been a very long time since DH and I went to the movies. Ever since we became parents our trips to the theater have been very infrequent, so we do the next best thing—watch DVDs. Thanks to the Family Review Network, I was able watch the DVD Then She Found Me ($19.99 at Amazon.com), starring Helen Hunt, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, and Colin Firth.

Based on the best selling novel by Elinor Lipman, Then She Found Me, which is Helen Hunt’s directorial debut and winner of the Audience Award Palm Springs International Film Festival, “…follows schoolteacher April Epner (Hunt) on her very unlikely path toward personal fulfillment. Following her separation from her husband (Matthew Broderick) and the death of her adoptive mother, April is contacted by her apparent birth mother (Bette Midler), a colorful local talk show host who’s not exactly the ideal mom. As she tries to become the mother to April that she never was able to be, April finds solace in the arms of the father of one of her students (Colin Firth). With every aspect of her world turned upside down, April must learn how to cope with an age-old truth—life can change in a heartbeat.”

And change it does for April, as each day she encounters change in her life, both good and bad, and she goes through a range of emotions daily—from happiness and bliss to heartbreak and betrayal. Helen Hunt’s portrayal of a woman trying to find purpose in her life while her world is being turned upside down was fantastic. The other main actors were also great in this film. Frank (Firth), bitter because of his past, was quite smitten with April, but hesitant to risk getting his heart broken again. Ben (Broderick) was convincing as an insecure, indecisive man who helped contribute to the chaos of April’s life. And the performance by Bette Midler as April’s mother, Bernice, is exactly what you’d expect—outrageous and fun, yet deep down you know she only wants to do what’s best for April.

Both DH and I enjoyed this touching and amusing movie. It was not entirely predictable, and I was captivated until the end. I also love how the meaning of the movie’s title can be interpreted in more ways than one. It’s not just about a mother finding the daughter she gave away for adoption, but there are many other examples of how “she” found “me.”

Watch Then She Found Me and you’ll find out exactly what I mean.

Review: The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Your Carbon Footprint

As most of you know, I’m on a green journey, trying to live a greener, more eco-friendly lifestyle. During this journey, I’ve been trying to reduce my carbon footprint by recycling, conserving water, and performing other tasks. However, I never fully understood or knew how to calculate my carbon footprint until I read The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to Your Carbon Footprint ($9.95), thanks to an opportunity from the Family Review Network and The Complete Idiot’s Guide Series.

What exactly is a carbon footprint? According to the book, a carbon footprint “sums up the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced. A carbon footprint includes many things, but for measuring convenience, all factors are converted to units of carbon dioxide (CO2)."

The beginning of the book really got my brain working, covering the basics of carbon footprints and energy—it was like I was back in high school, learning about chemistry (although now I actually paid attention to what I was reading)!

Subsequent chapters focused on different ways to reduce your carbon footprint in various areas, such as at home, at work or school, and on the roads. The book provided a lot of simple suggestions that you could implement right away to reduce your carbon footprint, some of which I’m sure most of you are already doing, such as lowering the thermostat on your water heater, turning off the water while you brush your teeth, or recycling your glass, aluminum, and plastic containers.

The book also provides a lot of statistics about energy usage, helpful definitions, and information on future initiatives and plans to help reduce our energy consumption.

The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to Your Carbon Footprint was a very interesting and enlightening read. What I really like about the book is how it doesn’t tell you that you need to go out and buy a hybrid car or buy only locally produced foods to reduce your carbon footprint. The book makes you think about the various factors involved in your daily decisions regarding shopping, commuting, or working, and notes how there really is no "right way" that suits everyone in terms of reducing your carbon footprint. Everyone is different and can find a way to reduce his or her carbon footprint that suits his or her lifestyle.

Whether you have installed solar panels on your home, use reusable totes to shop, or installed CFLs in all of your light fixtures, every bit helps, and we can all make a difference in creating a healthier environment.

Giveaway, Review: Stuck on You

Within the past few years, there have been a lot of babies born within our group of friends. When I say a lot, I mean A LOT. This means whenever we have a get together, there are always toys, books, or sippy cups that get lost or into the wrong hands. Therefore, the timing was perfect when I was presented with an opportunity to review Stuck on You through the Family Review Network.

Stuck on You “is a fun, innovative company…with the purpose of helping parents to organize their hectic households. Our great system allows you to choose from a wide range of quality stick-on labels, then customize them with a name or message, teamed with one of our gorgeous icons…We use only the best vinyl available—waterproof, microwave safe, dishwasher safe and UV resistant-and our iron/sew on labels are made to stay put, and survive all your washer and dryer wear-and-tear.”

Stuck on You offers so many different types of labels—you’ll find exactly what you need, and even find things you didn’t know you needed! They have labels for school supplies, organizing the kitchen, gift tags, clothing…I could go on and on! It’s so simple to personalize the labels: “choose the product, choose the color, choose the icon and now choose the font” (Stuck on You now offers 7 brand new fonts!). They have various colors and an assortment of icons to choose from. The possibilities are endless!

I received a sampling of Stuck on You’s Designer Label Pack, Boy Animal Set. I stuck some of the labels on DS’s sippy cups, books, and toys. I have had no problems washing the sippy cup. The label just stays put--it doesn't peel off, fade, or tear. The label kept its place on his toys and books as well, and I simply love that I won’t be wondering if I’m bringing home the correct toy, book, or sippy cup the next time he has a playdate.

I also received a sampling of the Stick with Me wristbands, which is a great safety tool. They are made of durable, translucent, recycled plastic, and come in fun, bright colors. You simply write your child’s name and your contact number on the wristband. They would come in very handy during Halloween, with all the costumed kids excitedly running from house to house to get their treats--at times it could get a bit chaotic! I also think these would be great when going to crowded, popular amusement parks, and even for the upcoming hectic holiday shopping season when the malls are packed.

Congratulations to Rebecca!

Stuck on You is generously donating a pack of 12 Stick with Me wristbands (valued at $11.50) to one lucky winner, choice of boy, girl, or mixed pack.

Review: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Snack Cakes

I have a major sweet tooth. Major. So when I had the opportunity to review The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Snack Cakes ($16.95) thanks to the Family Review Network and The Complete Idiot's Guide Series, I jumped at the chance.

I originally thought the book included recipes for only “cakes”—cakes, cupcakes, etc., but it also contained recipes for brownies, bars, pastries, and more. The book is a snack lover’s dream!

The first few chapters discuss baking basics, and then comes the GOOD STUFF--the actual recipes! With over 100 recipes to choose from, you'll definitely find something you can't wait to indulge in. I found recipes in every chapter that I would try, with the exception of the chapters that focused on Doughnuts and Mini Fruitcakes—I’m not a fan of either of those types of snacks. I would list all the recipes I’d want to try, but to tell you the truth, that would mean listing almost all the recipes in the entire book! Here are a few: Peanut Butter-Filled Chocolate Cake, Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Bars, and Rocky Road Brownies. The book also featured color-photos of some of the desserts, which made me crave them even more.

Throughout the book, there are helpful and useful sidebars such as Heads Up, which alerts you to common mistakes (definitely something useful for me since I've been known to make a mistake or two or more when baking), and Helpful Hints, which help you save time. The recipes indicate serving amounts and how long it’ll take to prep and cook.

I honestly can’t wait to try out the recipes. If you are a sweets lover like me, have a bake sale coming up, or need to bring a dessert to a party or gathering, you’ll have to check out The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Snack Cakes. I’m sure you’ll find the perfect sweet treat recipe for any occasion.
