EcoRanch

I love to play games—all kinds of games, and when I stumbled upon EcoRanch by Enlightened Play, I couldn’t wait to find out what the game was all about.

According to the website, EcoRanch is "a game of strategy based on inner and social awareness. EcoRanch was designed for tweens through teens, but parents, teachers, and those working with young people will enjoy this game to build and strengthen relationships. It’s fun to play while learning about oneself, other players, and the collective society we live in….EcoRanch is 100% manufactured in the United States and we place high value on its quality and environmental considerations. The inks are soy-based and non-toxic; materials are 20%PCW and 100% recyclable."

EcoRanch (ARV $34.95) is targeted towards kids ages 12 and up, and although we don’t have kids that age yet, we have relatives that age that we were anxious to play the game with.

The object of the game is to earn the most “enlightened point chips” by performing various actions in the game (e.g. answering Awareness Cards questions). Although the game ends when certain tasks are accomplished (e.g. donating supplies, getting animals in pens), the winner is actually the player with the most enlightened chips.

Setting up the game took a while because of all the “supply tokens” and “chips” that needed to be punched out. Understanding the objective and the rules of the game was a little tricky at first. I did have to read the instructions a couple of times, as well as while we were playing the game to make sure we were playing it correctly, but game play went smoothly.

I really enjoyed the Awareness Cards because not only do they feature Q&A and True or False cards (which were very informative—I learned a lot of new things), but there are Inner Awareness and Social Awareness cards that have no right or wrong answers. Instead, there are thought-provoking questions that take a little more time to answer. You’re asked open-ended questions, such as what are your views on animal testing, what you’re thankful for, and how you would end world hunger.

Of course, the game was also fun, as all who played were eager to get their animals in the appropriate foster pens and get all the needed supplies.

EcoRanch is a great game that is entertaining, educational, and enlightening!
