What are Your Must-Have Baby Items?

With baby #3 on the way, I realized that we're going to have to buy a few new baby items.

We still have a lot of stuff from when our first two kiddos were born, but some of the items are worn out or no longer working.

We'll need to look for a new stroller, a new swing, new car seats, among other things.

There have been so many new brands and types of baby products that have come out since DS2 was born, and it seems a little overwhelming. Friends who have just given birth this year have brands of strollers that I've never even heard of before!

What are your must-have baby items? (If you have a review on a blog of some of your favorite items, please feel free to leave the link(s)).

I'm going to need all the help I can get when it comes to finding the right baby products!

Must have item, a large (water-proofed inside) diaper bag with bottle holder pockets and such to keep it very organized. No more plunking things into an oversized tote, thank-you.

We travel frequently so our Ergo is a must have for us! Also, we love our Britax carseats.

Hifam said...

I absolutely loved my last car seat, but I don't think it's available any more. It was a fisher-price brand and for a handle it had one flexible cloth strap. The strap could unhook to become twice as long so that I could put it behind my back. It's hard to explain, but I could wear the car seat like a sling almost. The car seat was the lightest I've ever found and it was easy to carry that way. I could use both my hands. Or I could leave the strap 1/2 length and carry it on my shoulder like a purse. It was an amazing invention and I got questions everywhere I went about it. That doesn't help you out much, but if you see a car seat like that - try it out! :)

I second the Ergo - it was a LIFESAVER and can be used even in toddler years. What a great investment that was!

The must have baby item for me is pacifiers and lots of them

The Juppy Baby Walker

Is a great product... my baby girl was using a normal walker and then she doesn't like it anymore... So we get the Juppy and she wants to run on it... lol... Great idea who made it!

Beth said...

my must have item was the boppy - it was a lifesaver for nursing and tummy time and even sleeping!

our must have was a graco infant car seat/carrier

One of my favorite must have baby items is the bouncy seat. I have the boppy version and we used it all the time for at least the forst 6 months and even longer. I am planning on using it again for baby #2.

I think some of the coolest must have items are Tommee Tippee products.

They have mats and bowls that you use at the table so your older baby can't knock food over, and clever spill proof cups and bottles. They also have innovative pacifiers!

Champagne Wisdom said...

Our must have is Dr. Brown's baby bottles - the wide mouth version. They're harder to find, but you can order online - and they're great for interchanging bottle and breast. Also Boudreaux's Butt Paste - I swear by it!!

Sleep sacks! our little one moves all the time!

The biggest must-have item I can think of is a battery operated swing. It was a LIFE SAVER for me during the early years of both of my kids

Kimberly said...

I think a few must-haves that I didn't realize were so important were the Halo sleep sack swaddle (it really works!) and the Bumbo seat. It has a tray so it can double as an activity seat and really comes in handy when baby needs to be in a seat but doesn't want to recline.

For the first few months, my musthave item was those gowns with the open stretchy bottoms. It makes it a ton easier for changing diapers ....Tiffypoot @ (aol.com)

I too will go with the swing, that is such a life saver

I know this is odd, but baby bottle brushes! They are multi purpose and can be used to clean water bottles, wine glasses, etc.

It's funny that someone said pacifiers...none of my 3 ever wanted one. My 2 sons enjoyed the infant swing but my daughter hated it. The one thing that I used for all 3 of them, and I still do with my youngest, is a Boppy Pillow. It's great for support when you're rocking the baby to sleep. I own 2 of them (one for upstairs and one for downstairs...yes, I'm lazy). :-)

Congrats on baby #3!

I loved my Moby wrap and was able to use it until my daughter was a over a year old. At first it took a little work to get it on but after a week or two it was super easy.

My all-time favorite baby item was always Johnson's diaper cream. Not goopy like so many others...but creamy & soft & worked so well on my babies!

Chrissyb said...

my must have item is my Medela breast pump esp when I went back to work! Plus it saved us money instead of buying formula.

Nicole H. said...

We were given a bottle warmer at our baby shower and thought it was a crazy/useless item. We shoved it in the closet. Eventually after our son was born we realized how annoying it was boiling water at 2am!!!! After setting up and testing the bottle warmer, I literally announced how amazing this invention was to the world - ringing one of my neighbors bells as well to tell her the great news! I LOVED our bottle warmer and was sad to pack it away until baby #2!

my must have baby item is our fisher price swing! bub still uses it at 10 months and 20 pounds (of course he sits up in it half the time):) it was the ONLY thing that would calm him when he was a tiny one and the only way he would sleep through the night. It was worth every penny!

The Bumbo is the best. I did not have it for my first child. But once it came out with my second child I loved it. He could sit down and play or just watch the family.

Definitely our Bum Genius cloth diapers, the Boppy pillow, and the baby carrier. I don't know how I would have survived without them!

Must have items for baby: a sling, wrap or other infant carrier (my babies loved to be held), a battery operated swing, lots of BIG receiving blankets, and a good swaddling blanket.

My must-have baby item was our cradle swing. It got me through those first few weeks when I needed a moment to relax.

It seems silly, but our most-used, absolutely ESSENTIAL baby item was a large exercise ball. My daughter was colicky and had severe reflux and spent almost 24 hours a day crying. It got exhausting walking through the house & bouncing her and one day I pulled out the exercise ball that I used to bounce one when I was near labor. Bounced with her on it & it calmed her down!

My husband and I spent almost 5 months rotating on and off ball duty with my daughter.

Pacifiers! Have plenty so you aren't crawling around on the floor looking for them!!!

baby swing!!! totally. this helped with out little one until about 6 months when she really wanted to wiggle out of it. but it was a lifesaver when i needed a shower!!

The bumpo baby seat is one all the new moms I know rave about!

My must have baby item is the fisherprice infant to toddler rocker. We got one when we had ds #2 and used it just as much with ds #3. It is nice to have a safe place to put baby when you have to get things done and older siblings are playing around. You certainly get your moneys worth too, since the kids can use it until they are 3+ years old. Congratulation on baby #3.

I think even when you use reusable wipes, its always a good idea to have some disposable ones on hand. I opt for 7th Generation so its not totally laden with chemicals, but sometimes a little wipe is a miracle worker!

paula michele said...

I also think the Moby Wrap is a must have. My son had reflux. The Moby Wrap was the one thing that would always calm him down and put him to sleep. I would put him in it and he would stop crying. It seemed to help the pain and give him some comfort.

The most important items, in my book, are cloth diapers. No, I don't mean for diapering, but for everything else. Yep, thos cutsy little handmade "burp cloths" are all fine and dandy, but they don't work! You need 2-3 6-packs of those Gerber cloth diapers that you can find everywhere. I guarantee that you'll use them for everything- spit-up, changing pad, to prop baby's head up in the swing... And when they get older, you'll still use them: blankets for stuffed animal, to clean up the spilled grape juice ASAP, as a cooling wet rag for feverish foreheads. AND then, when you think you're through, you'll find yourself dusting with one and think of all those days when your grown kid was just a little one!

rubymoon said...

My must have's are probably the same things that were important to my Mom--a pacifier, a lot of cloth diapers (for bottoms and burping) and Bag Balm for the bottom (works better than any commercial "for baby" ointment. Who would think cow balm is that good?

A must have baby item is a swing. They are fantastic for putting the lil ones to sleep so that you can do the dishes or a load of laundry or just use the restroom!

jodi said...

links...they look like chain links that connect. i received a package of these at my shower and i was like oh gee thanks. they turned out to be one of my favorite gifts! connect the links to a toy on the stroller and it will never hit the floor, the uses were endless! then when my daughter got older she loved playing with them

I keep my grandson sometimes and he has a pacifier attached to a little plush puppy (don't remember brand name). Makes that little paci sooo much easier to find! Keeps it from going down the couch, carseat and other hiding places!

Oh, I won a thing called a No Throw a month or so ago that is wonderful. It is like a leash for the pacifiers but is for bottles and sippy cups. It's so nice, and easier on your back, to not have to bend over every two seconds when they figure out it's like a game to throw their things. Lol.

I must second some great items like the Boppy, the swaddler, swing so many great items your readers have suggested I have to go with the half size playpen that has a changing table and bassinet type bed on top. They are wonderful, keep baby close then as they grow the play pen comes in handy for those important times, traveling, when needing a nap outside or when you are needing to do something outside and baby/toddler must be contained for a short period of time

White bath towels, and sweat socks. Sounds weird but I HATED those baby towels/washcloths - invariably they'd soak through whenever we got done with bath time, and my son was still wet. So, I bought some really absorbent regular white towels and used those. The sweat socks, I put on my hands inside-out and used them instead of washcloths - they worked better, and I was able to keep a firm grip on the baby the whole time. I turned all my friends onto this little tip :)

A more specific comment on my Diaper bag comment above. Must have a Carter's 5 Piece Unisex Diaper Bag Set, I like the ones with the brown color. They have a changing pad inside. Lots of organizer pockets. A removable accessory pouch. There is a smaller tote with bottle and food carrying pockets that can be unclipped and used separately.
The thing about this diaper bag is the reasonable cost factor. You can usually find them on the internet for under $30, if you put in a search for Carter's Diaper Bags.
