Skelanimals Giveaway

If you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day gift for a special someone, Skelanimals offers items for both children and adults that are unique and adorable!

Skelanimals are adorable little animals who have met an untimely end-mostly due to their own reckless and ill-advised behavior. They are looking for a home with that special someone to care for and love them, but not just anyone. They like people who have a warm heart, after all they're just bones. They need you to keep them warm and cozy. Snuggling is their favorite thing to do, especially when you watch a scary movie.

There are all sorts of products available on the Skelanimals website, including clothes, plush toys, school supplies, and even candy!

I personally love the trendy tees in the bright colors!

Sophia Wants to Be...A Painter Review

Little Music Man recently got to try out a new app for the iPhone/iPod Touch--Sophia Wants to Be… a Painter (ARV $.99).

Meet Sophia – a little girl who loves to explore and learn about all the interesting jobs that people do every day. Share this story app with your kids today and join Sophia on her quest to answer the question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?”

In this delightful children's story, the first in the series, Sophia is inspired by a class trip to the art museum to pull out her paints and brushes and see if maybe a painter is what she wants to be!

As with other iOrbi story apps we were fortunate to review, Sophia Wants to Be…A Painter was a really cute story. Little Music Man first listened to the story narrated to him, but sometimes he couldn’t wait for the narration to end so he’d scroll through to the next page before the entire page was read. However, he seems to be more attentive when I read the story myself.

My favorite feature of this app is the ability to record your own voice. This allows me to “get in character,” and I think makes it an even better story-telling experience!

There's also an option to view the story with or without text, as well as to listen to it being narrated in different languages!

Although Sophia Wants to Be…A Painter didn’t have any neat features within the story itself, it was still a nice story and a great app to add to our collection!

You can purchase Sophia Wants to Be…A Painter on iTunes

My Storytime Friends Review

Thanks to My Storytime Friends, we received a kit with some cute surprises as well as access to even more surprises online!

My Storytime Friends is an interactive toy and storybook set for children ages 3-8 that is both entertaining and educational. The My Storytime Friends set includes a unique combination of a plush stuffed animal, an inspiring hardcover storybook and a lifetime membership to the My Storytime Friends Book of the Month Club. Membership also includes free access to My Storytime Friends online, an interactive place to learn and play. Kids will love watching their cuddly toys come to life as characters in the new stories each month. Parents and Grandparents will appreciate the positive life lessons the stories teach children about overcoming challenges, helping others and achieving dreams.

We were fortunate to receive a My Storytime Friends Kit (ARV $39.99), which included a cute plush bear and the book A Winning Dream by Andrew Wolfendon and illustrated by artist Berne Williams.

A Winning Dream: Brady Bear loves to race and he loves to win. When he enters the local ski race, all he can think about is coming in first. That is, until he realizes that some things matter more than the prize. Follow his fast adventure in this fun, inspiring tale.

This was such a great book with such an important message of how winning a race isn’t always everything—sometimes there are more important things that matter.

Although Little Music Man was more interested in all of the colorful illustrations and is too young to grasp the meaning of the story, I’m sure when he gets older he’ll be able to understand the message of the book and enjoy it even more.

My Storytime Friends provided Little Music Man a great book that we can read together, and a cute stuffed teddy bear that he can cuddle with, but that’s not all!

By entering the code on the tag of the box that the bear and book came in on the My Storytime Friends website, we received lifetime access to the following:

  • Narrated online flip-book version of the Book of the Month
  • Printable colored PDF copies of each Book of the Month story plus black and white versions for coloring. Hardcover copies of the books are available to members for just $6.95 with free shipping included.
  • Access to educational, interactive activities on MyStorytimeFriends.com as well as additional offline activities for children and workbooks for parents.
  • Audio-book version of each story

Additional Online Benefits:

  • Children can catch up on their Storytime Friends between books by visiting the Newsstand.
  • Kids can interact with characters from the stories by sending and receiving mail through the Post Office.
  • The My Storytime Friends online store features fun accessories and outfits for the plush toys available for purchase.

I think having lifetime online access to these features is a huge benefit. For one thing, Little Music Man loves going on the computer, and being able to read books online and print or buy only what we want is great.

And each month there’s a new surprise book to read!

I personally think My Storytime Friends is a neat idea—combining reading and the internet to create a world where Little Music Man not only has fun, but can learn important lessons as well.

Free Sample of Pampers Cruisers

Starting January 29th, parents everywhere will be able to request a free sample three-pack of Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max on Pampers.com If the sample sent includes a diaper stamped Team USA (randomly inserted in select sample packs), their baby will win a year's supply of Pampers diapers!

Did you know that a cruising baby in one day can take as many steps as a marathon runner in a race*, and a nine-month old baby can crawl up to 400 meters in 20 minutes**? It's this active play that continually inspires the Pampers brand, and that's why moms and dads are encouraged to log on to Pampers.com beginning February 12 to join in celebrating the development of their own best players. Parents will have the ability to upload a video of their baby crawling from left to right, and randomly selected videos will be compiled into a Pampers Cruisers Diapers with Dry Max "Baby Relay" commercial which will air during closing day of the Olympic Winter Games, giving babies a chance to showcase their own playful ability in the same forum as the most elite athletes.

Tickle Tap Apps Review and iTunes Giveaway

Thanks to Tickle Tap Apps, Little Music Man has been keeping busy with some new iPhone apps!

We were fortunate to receive codes to download the following apps (ARV $1.99 each)

Pattern Painter enables preschoolers to learn and draw shapes at their own pace. Children complete basic shape patterns by tapping the next shape. Then they get to draw the correct shape. The app’s built-in shape recognition means beginners get extra help with easy-to-follow tracing animations. Jinja the cat, Robin the bird and Harvey the dog also appear for comic relief, making Pattern Painter the perfect preschool puzzler!

Little Music Man enjoys completing patterns in other games and even at school, so naturally he loved Pattern Painter! After each pattern was successfully completed, Little Music Man would practice drawing different shapes with his finger. Fortunately the app displayed the shape so he could trace it, because he still doesn’t know how to draw shapes on his own.

Color Collector takes preschoolers on a playful color quest. Children tap the screen to collect colors. When red, orange, yellow, green, blue or purple are found Fins the fish is fed. Stars show which colors have been collected, and when all six different colors are found Fins the fish swims around in delight. Color Collector is an updated eye spy game for little iPhone explorers. It makes it exciting for children to discover colors wherever they are!

I thought this was a really neat app. Little Music Man would point the color collector to an object with a specific color, and once the color is “collected,” the app tries to identify the color! Once the color is identified, a cute little fishy fish swims around, and the more colors you get, the more fish you get swimming around!

The app did have trouble identifying yellow (it would always identify it as orange), and sometimes a color would not be identified at all and we’d have to “collect” another color, but overall it’s pretty neat!

The Tickle Tap Apps are really a lot of fun, and for just a small price, Little Music Man can be entertained for hours!

Shop: You can purchase Tickle Tap Apps on
iTunes.

Win: One lucky winner will receive a $20 iTunes Gift Card!

Using Reusable Bags

One of my resolutions last year was to use my reusable bags more often, and I really do use them a lot more now!

I have 10 reusable bags. I leave some in my purse and in the car, but sometimes I still forget to use them.

Once I went into a store and only after the grocer packed my groceries in a plastic bag did I realize that my reusable bag was still in my hand! Talk about an absent-minded mommy moment!

For me personally, I’m more consistent with using the bags when I go to a store that gives credit. One store on the island,
Foodland, gives a $.5 credit for each reusable bag I use. $.5 may not seem like much, but that really adds up!

Hopefully I’ll simply get more used to bringing and using my reusable bags whenever I shop so it’ll be like second nature.

How do you remind yourself to use reusable bags whenever you go shopping?

Do stores in your area give incentives for using them?

Denise's Daily Dozen Review and Giveaway

I first heard of Denise Austin back in college. She had an exercise show on TV in the mornings, which I would occasionally do. Ever since then I’ve seen her on countless fitness programs, on TV shows, and featured in magazine articles, so I was eager to review Denise’s Daily Dozen: The Easy, Every Day Program to Lose Up to 12 Pounds in 2 Weeks (ARV $16.99).

Much more than just another exercise book, Denise's Daily Dozen covers a whole range of health and diet related concepts yet manages it all in a no-stress, time-conscious program of 12's. At its core, this book contains the minimum daily requirements to keep the reader flexible, strong and trim. Organized simply into seven chapters, which equal the seven days of the week, it covers a full week in daily allotments. Each day will have its own focus from Monday being "fat burning day" to Sunday's "recharge and rejuvenate."Denise has created a total body program, including a 7-day balanced meal plan that includes healthy recipes, and a workout that encompasses 12 exercises done in 12 minutes each day. Everyone can take just 12 minutes, at whatever time of the day works for them, and turn it over to these simple and fun exercises. Cardio, toning, yoga and breathing exercises...they're all here but in a way that maximizes effect while minimizing time.Beyond a dozen exercises for each day of the week this book will include many other of Denise’s dozens for each day.

At first I thought Denise’s Daily Dozen was just about exercises, but it’s so much more. She offers great tips on how to de-stress, eat healthy, how to curb cravings, and she even offers lots of tasty recipes.

Throughout the book people’s success stories are shared to help motivate me even more.

Denise’s Daily Dozen is a great book, and I love how it’s broken up by day. For each day, Denise has suggestions on exercises and meal plans, and overall the book is very easy to read and follow.

All of her ideas, exercises, and recipes were not too complicated, and Denise seemed to be very encouraging throughout the book.

Denise’s Daily Dozen offers a lot of practical suggestions that should help me to not only lose weight, but to live a better life overall, with just a minimum of 12 minutes a day.

Shop: You can purchase Denise's Daily Dozen at various retailers online and nationwide.

Win:
Five lucky winners will each receive a copy of Denise's Daily Dozen!

Coromega® Kids Omega3 Squeeze Review

Little Music Man doesn’t eat much fish, so in order for him to get Omega-3s, I’ve been sprinkling flaxseed on his cereal, but no matter how much I try to mix up his cereal really well so he can’t see the flaxseed, I know he can taste it, and he doesn't care for the taste. Fortunately, we were able to try out Coromega® Kids Omega3 Squeeze, which is a really tasty way for Little Music Man to get Omega-3s!

Welcome to Coromega! We believe Omega-3 is essential to good health
and that’s why we developed the first delicious Omega3 in a convenient, single-serve Squeeze. Coromega is not a pill! Our Omega3 Squeeze is a tasty burst of goodness with 2 essential fatty acids, DHA and EPA, and a clinically proven 300% better absorption than regular softgels. Bioavailability Study. The best part? Coromega is a supplement that is actually delicious!

Coromega ® Kids Omega3 Squeeze – High DHA Omega-3
Coromega Kids Lemon-Lime and Orange Squeezers™ provide 200 mg of DHA and 36 mg of EPA in each yummy once-daily packet. DHA is especially important in the development of young brains, and the 5:1 ratio of omega-3s in Coromega Kids Omega3 Squeeze has the same ratio found in mothers’ breast milk, so Coromega kids receive the optimal proportions of omega-3 nutrition possible.

We were fortunate to receive some packets of Coromega Kids Omega3 Squeeze in the both the Lemon Lime and Orange flavors (ARV $24.99/30 count).

The directions say for children over 4, simply squeeze directly into mouth or into a spoon or smoothie.

With Little Music Man, I squeezed the Coromega directly into his mouth. At first he was a little hesitant to try it since it was something “new,” but after the first squeeze, he was eager for me to squeeze the rest into his mouth (he had a little difficulty squeezing the packet himself, but for older kids it should be a lot easier).

I also tried each of the flavors. Both the Lemon Lime and Orange flavors were really good. DS1 liked them too, but he preferred the Orange flavor the most.

I like how the Omega3 Squeeze comes in convenient packets that I can keep in my purse and take with me anywhere! They’re easy to open, and it can be quite versatile—mix it with fruit, yogurt, or just consume it as is.

I think Coromega Kids Omega3 Squeeze provides a delicious and practical way for Little Music Man to get Omega-3s!

Shop: You can purchase Coromega products at health food and vitamin retailers including Whole Foods, GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, and Vitamin World, at grocery stores such as Albertson’s and Publix, and numerous online retailers.

Princess Katie and Racer Steve Durham Performing Arts Center Giveaway

Princess Katie and Racer Steve are ‘Revved Up & Ready to Rock’ at DPAC. They are roaring down a kids’ rock & roll speedway and bringing you the ultimate kids’ extravaganza! The NYC-based band is known as much for its creative energy, daring innovations, and positive spirit as for its terrific music. Kids are encouraged to join Princess Katie, Racer Steve, Space on Bass, and Crash the Drummer in rocking out to "music with a message that hasn’t lost its cool." The high-energy show will feature tunes from Princess Katie & Racer Steve’s critically acclaimed albums, ’Songs for the Coolest Kids,’ ’Fast & Feisty,’ and the brand new 3rd album ‘Tiny Cool’ offering contemporary takes on popular music sounds ranging from jazz and swing to neo-Latin and electric rock ’n’ roll to rap, West Indian, folk, country, and 12-bar blues. Spontaneity and surprise are key to Princess Katie & Racer Steve’s shows. You never know what they’ll dream up. Princess Katie (aka Katie O’Sullivan) says, "I just can’t seem to do a show unless it’s special for the kids!" She often brings her giant prize wheel and spins it to choose songs or activities like "Conga" or "Freeze Dance." Princess Katie & Racer Steve might throw out inflatable soccer balls or surprise the kids with a confetti or Mylar steamer launch. Sometimes they’ll hand out mini racing flags so kids can wave them every time they hear, "Go, Go, Go" in a song about Racer Steve’s car racing. They’ll wear "funk hats" and sunglasses for their "Hey Claire" funk song, and for "Sneakers," Katie has GIANT sneakers to wear under her princess dress.

Says Racer Steve (aka Steve Borne), "We’re really working toward entertaining kids on every level, not only through the music, but also by making them laugh. Behind everything we create, there’s an element of humor, and we’re so happy to see that the kids, get it and laugh along with us."

This follow-on book to Tough Times, Tough People continues Chicken Soup for the Soul’s focus on inspiration and hope in these difficult times. These inspirational stories remind us that each day holds something to be thankful for — whether it is having the sun shine or having food on the table. Power outages and storms, health scares and illnesses, job woes and financial insecurities, housing challenges and family worries test us all. But there is always a silver lining. The simple pleasures of family, home, health, and inexpensive good times are described. These stories of optimism, faith, and strength will make a great start to 2010.

I admit that many times I complain and worry about things, but I often look back and realize how trivial my complaints are when in reality I am truly blessed, and reading Count Your Blessings only made me even more thankful for the countless blessings I have in my life.

I could relate to many of the stories in the book, but the stories that really hit close to home were those about losing a job.

A couple of years ago, the company I worked for (and thought I would work for until I retired) abruptly shut down, and I, along with thousands of other employees, were shocked and uncertain about our futures.

What made it even scarier was that just a few weeks before the company shut down, I found out I was pregnant with my second son.

I was consumed with anger and worry, but after a few days, I realized that worrying was unhealthy not only for me, but the baby, and I started to focus on what was really important, and in the end I knew that everything would be all right.

“No Longer Needed,” “The Comfortable Living Checklist,” and “We Have it All” are stories about people who lost their jobs and were later able to realize what truly was important in life. They were ultimately able to move forward, even though it was difficult.

There are so many other stories about people overcoming adversities and gaining new perspectives that were really touching.

One of my favorite stories was Third World Banquet, which was a story about the actions of a sixth-grader who really made an impression on everyone who participated in and witnessed a school event.

Things have a way of working themselves out. Everything happens for a reason. The stories in Count Your Blessings reinforce those notions.

And I am truly thankful for all the blessings that I have in my life.

The Spice Kitchen Review

I recently had a chance to review The Spice Kitchen: Everyday Cooking with Organic Spices by Katie Luber and Sara Engram (ARV $29.99), and not only did I learn a lot of great information about herbs and spices, but I now have several recipes to turn to when I need a quick appetizer or crowd-pleasing dessert!

The Spice Kitchen offers more than one hundred delicious recipes for using herbs and spices to add vibrant flavors to your food at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and any time in between. From Spiced Yogurt and Granola Parfaits, to Strawberry Salad with Cinnamon-Balsamic Vinaigrette, Spiced Guacamole, Tarragon Chicken Potpie, Clove Spiced Caramel Corn, and more, this exciting cookbook is full of inventive recipes, information, and tips for using herbs and spices. Best of all, the recipes are easy and fuss free—a must for busy home cooks who want to spend less time in the kitchen and more time at the family table. And with dozens of full-color photographs and illustrations, The Spice Kitchen is as beautiful as it is practical.

The Spice Kitchen started out with a great introduction to herbs and spices, and the recipes itself were varied and ranged from simple to complex.

There were lots of recipes for appetizers, main dishes, and even breakfasts, but of course my favorite section was the desserts. My mouth watered as I read through the recipes for Fresh Apple Streusel Cake and Sweet Heat Brownies.

Most of the recipes seemed simple enough for someone like me—someone who doesn’t have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen (and doesn’t like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen), and the first recipe I tried was very simple—Spice Crusted Cheese Truffles.

Requiring just a few ingredients, all of which I had on hand, it was a very easy recipe, and the end result was simply delicious!

The Spice Kitchen also featured a lot of fun facts throughout the books, and there were several great photos, but I do wish there were more photos to accompany the recipes.

Overall I thought the Spice Kitchen offered a good variety of recipes, and I can’t wait to try out more!

Adventure of Meno Review and Giveaway

My boys were recently introduced to Planet Meno through two fun books, Adventure of Meno: Big Fun! and Wet Friend! by Tony and Angela DiTerlizzi (ARV $9.99 each)

This six-book series about Meno, a nostalgically modern space-elf and his out-of-this-world adventures, by award winning author/illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi and his wife Angela, will have kids and parents excited for each and every adventure. Each story is told with bright illustrations in nonsensical language, as if it were translated from Meno's Alien language into English. As childlike as they are sweet, these stories find humor in the simplest places, and are a delight to readers both young and old.

In book one, Big Fun!, tots and their lucky parents join Meno and his best friend Yamagoo, and find out what Meno thinks is the biggest fun of all! In Meno’s second adventure, Wet Friend!, Meno and Yamagoo decide they want a “friend trio” and, thanks to their wish-granting friend Wishi, get some out-of-the-ordinary choices along the way.

The Adventure of Meno books are so cute and are nothing like I’ve ever seen before! I love the retro colors and graphics and the “Meno” words. The books are not too long, and are easy reads for little kids. Although Meno and his friends speak in their own “language,” and what they say isn’t grammatically correct, my boys still have fun looking through the books and Little Music Man enjoys repeating the words as I read them.

What I love the most about the books are the fun surprises, such as learning what Meno and his pal Yamagoo do for “Big Fun,” and what very funny option Wishi gave them in Wet Friend!

We can’t wait to see what future adventures Meno, Yamagoo, and Wishi will find themselves in!

Shop: You can purchase Big Fun! and Wet Friend! on
Borders.com and at various other retailers online and nationwide.

Win: One lucky winner will receive a Planet Meno prize pack which includes a copy each of Big Fun! and Wet Friend!, and a custom made Meno or Wishi blanket (winner’s choice of blanket).

FreeinUK

The following sponsored post was submitted by FreeinUK:

Reliving the Youthful Days…

Betty's joys knew no bounds as she held the gift voucher that she had won in an online jackpot draw. A couple of weeks ago, she had come across some websites that gave details about free product samples available with various online stores in the UK. Just for the heck of it, she had registered with them and even entered some of their
free competitions. And lo! Lady Luck was on her side.

The gift voucher entitled her to get free clothes from an online fashion merchant for a certain credit limit. She sat in her cosy sofa with a hot cup of coffee and her laptop, and browsed through the virtual shop pages. There were vivid collections of clothes, jewellery, bags and other accessories. For a while, she sat admiring the various displays. Nostalgic memories of her teenage days suddenly came rushing back to her. Window shopping was something she had loved to do as a teenager. Saving up her pocket money she would even hunt for shops where she could buy things for cheap. However, now this mother of two, had got so busy managing home and work, that she had forgotten those little things that had made her so happy. Betty relived those sweet youthful days sitting in the comforts of her home.

She was overjoyed to learn that window shopping and finding
free stuff on the internet were just a few clicks away. There was no need now to worry about who would look after the children while she was away shopping. And the best part was that the online shopping had even led to some quality mother-children bonding. The trio spent time together browsing through these freebie sites, finding new toys, clothes, CDs, DVDs, food stuff, books and more.

This is a paid post.

Them Crooked Vultures Review

I’ve heard of Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) before and am familiar with many of their songs, but I was not familiar with their new band, Them Crooked Vultures, until I had a chance to review their new self-titled debut album (ARV $13.98).

The track list includes:

No One Loves Me & Neither Do I
Mind Eraser, No Chaser
New Fang
Dead End Friends
Elephants
Scumbag Blues
Bandoliers
Reptiles
Interlude With Ludes
Warsaw Or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up
Caligulove
Gunman
Spinning In Daffodils

I thought Them Crooked Vultures' debut CD was great, and was quite surprised I’ve never heard of them at all, especially since the group is comprised of such super rockstars!

The first track, No One Loves Me & Neither Do I was pretty catchy and had a good beat, and Elephants was a neat song because it really started to sound like an elephant on the track!

My favorite tracks were New Fang and Dead End Friends. I always feel like I want to rock out and sing along with the CD whenever I hear these songs.

I used to listen to this type of music a lot while I was in college, and listening to Them Crooked Vultures brought me back to those (partying) days!

I enjoyed this CD and each time I listen to it the tracks grow on me. I think it’s a great debut for Them Crooked Vultures!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story Behind the Song Review and Giveaway

Often times when I listen to the radio or a favorite CD I wonder if the song was written about a specific person or experience, which is why I was very much looking forward to reading the book Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story behind the Song: The Exclusive Personal Stories behind 101 of Your Favorite Songs (ARV $14.95).

Ever wondered what inspired your favorite songs? What was going on in the songwriter's life at the time? Who those lyrics were really about? Did he really write the song on a napkin? Many of music's most famous names reveal the stories behind their best-known songs. Many of these exclusive stories are told for the first time. Photos and lyrics are included too. You will never listen to these songs the same way again. A great gift for anyone who loves music, any age.

The Story Behind the Song featured the writers responsible for songs old and new, and from various different genres. Some stories I was somewhat familiar with, while others I had no clue about.

I knew the song One Sweet Day, written by Nathan Morris, was written for someone who had passed away, but I didn’t realize it was written for the Boyz II Men road manager.

I also learned the story about, Stay (I Missed You), by Lisa Loeb, which I always love singing to whenever I hear it, and how it became a part of the Reality Bites soundtrack.

I read about so many other songs, some of which are long-time favorites, such as Man in the Mirror and I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, and others I have never even heard before, such as The Streak and Father of Mine.

The stories were amusing, inspirational, and intriguing.

The Story Behind the Song was a great read, and I know the next time I hear one of the songs featured in the book, I’m going to listen a little more closely, and I know I’ll enjoy and appreciate the song even more.

Shop: You can purchase Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story Behind the Song on Amazon.com, or at various other retailers online and nationwide.

Win: Three lucky winners will each receive a copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story Behind the Song!

Pizza Possibilities

Our entire family loves pizza.

Before we had kids, DH often used to make pizza dough from scratch and we'd enjoy pizzas with all kinds of different toppings. Some of our favorites were barbecue chicken pizza and ranch pizza.

Now when we want our pizza fix, I pick up a Boboli multipack from Costco. The pack contains 2 crusts and 2 packs of pizza sauce. It costs about $5 or $6.

I always have the pizza crusts handy for those many nights when I need a quick and easy dinner.

My favorite pizza to make is a pesto pizza, with mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, and red onions.

However this go around I simply put mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and olives.

Simple, yet delicious!

I think I may try to convince DH to start making his pizza dough from scratch again and perhaps we'll store some in the freezer.

I also want to try out different types of pizzas. I thought about a teriyaki chicken pizza, but I wasn't sure what kind of sauce I'd use.

There's also a baked potato pizza recipe I want to try.

What's your favorite pizza/pizza toppings? I need more ideas!

General Mills Cereal Review and Savings

My boys loves all kinds of cereals, and so do I, and thanks to MyBlogSpark and General Mills, I received a lot of great information about cereal, as well as some coupons so we could enjoy even more cereal!

General Mills announced a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving. The company has already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.

Did you know that ready-to-eat cereal eaters consume less fat, less cholesterol and more fiber than non-cereal eaters? Cereals also deliver important vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients, making cereal a top source of key nutrients in children’s diets. Other cereal benefits:
  • Ready-to-eat cereals, including presweetened cereals, account for only 5% of sugar in children’s diets.
  • Ready-to-eat cereal is the No. 1 source of whole grains in a child’s diet today.
  • More frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights and lower Body Mass Index measures.
  • Studies also demonstrate the benefits of eating breakfast. A 1998 study showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school. Compared to children who skip breakfast, children who eat breakfast score higher on tests, are less likely to miss class or be tardy, have fewer reported discipline problems, and make fewer trips to the office.

With that in mind, I did not hesitate to pick up some boxes of General Mills cereal with the coupons I received.

Of course, Cheerios are always a must-have, and I also picked up Apple Cinnamon Cheerios which I was eager to try. Since Little Music Man loves Kix, I thought we’d try Honey Kix, and since he often asks for cookies, I’d thought Cookie Crisp would be a great choice.

Although not all of the cereals had sugar levels in the single digits per serving, the boxes did state they were a good source of nutrients and whole grain, and they all were delicious!

Cereal is a part of millions of kids’ breakfasts, and it’s great to know that General Mills is making a commitment to reduce the amount of sugar in their cereals and increasing its nutritional value as a whole.

For more information about kids and cereals, please visit Cereal Health and Wellness.

Shop: You can purchase General Mills cereals at various retailers online and nationwide.

Savvy Savings: Click here to receive a $1 off coupon for one of four General Mills cereals.

YogaWorks DVDs Review and Giveaway

I recently posted about a YogaWorks DVD I tried out, and I was fortunate to try two more over the past week (ARV $10.98 each):

Beginners AM/PM - Welcome to the exciting world of yoga! With the three basic workouts featured in YogaWorks Beginners AM/PM it will be a cinch to get going with your new yoga practice. You'll be guided through a series of fun and easy yoga postures that are simple enough for anyone to try. At a pace that's right for you, you'll build new strength and flexibility - in muscles you never knew you had!

The Beginners was a great workout and it made me more familiar with the most common poses.

The AM Wake-Up and PM Relax & Restore sessions were great ways to start and end the day. All the stretching in the various poses really felt wonderful!

Fit Abs - It's time to rejuvenate, slim down, and feel great! With YogaWorks Fit Abs, you will build a strong core in this fun, demanding practice that will tone your muscles and melt inches from your waist.

The Fit Abs section didn’t seem to incorporate as much abs work as compared to other abs workouts I’ve done, but the next day I really felt it. My muscles were sore!

The Core Yoga section, as expected, was tough. Lots of Downward Facing Dog, Upward Facing Dog, and Plank poses that I found myself struggling with once I got to the half-way point. I’m embarrassed that I’m so out of shape! And it got tougher! Through it all I felt my muscles burning and my body shaking. I knew I was getting a good workout.

The YogaWorks DVDs are great tools to help me get in shape, become more flexible, and improve my overall well-being!

Shop: You can purchase YogaWorks: Beginners AM/PM and YogaWorks: Fit Abs at various retailers online and nationwide.

Win: One lucky winner will receive a copy each of YogaWorks: Beginners AM/PM and YogaWorks: Fit Abs!

Add More ~ing to Your Life by Gabrielle Bernstein Review and Giveaway

Thanks to QNY, I received the book Add More ~ing to Your Life: A Hip Guide to Happiness by Gabrielle Bernstein (ARV $14.99, QNY), which was a very enlightening read!

In her hip self-transformational book Add More ~ing To Your Life, motivational speaker and life coach Gabrielle Bernstein truly shows you how to make happiness a way of life. Ms. Bernstein is bringing happy back.

Designed to bulldoze negative thought patterns and create personal change through positive affirmations, physical activity and visualization meditations, Gabrielle guides the reader to happiness in 30-days through her dynamic ~ing Equation a proven method of sharpening ones intuitive senses and activating untapped inspiration.

Gabrielle will prepare you to change your life by accessing a state of “flow” helping you connect with your ~ing (inner guide)- readying you to release your limiting beliefs and to choose happiness.

Rethinking + Moving + Receiving x 30 days = Changing.
The ~ing Equation is designed to bulldoze negative thought patterns and create positive change, achieving this in 30 days of affirmations, physical activity, and meditation. The author’s methodology is a sure-fire way to guide readers to “get out of their own way” and start loving—and fully living— life. The unique inclusion of physical activity helps readers to shift the way their body responds to their minds. Each activity offers an opportunity for the reader to experience a state of flow that cannot be accessed idly sitting in front of their computer screen. Anything but a dry, how-to manual, Add More ing to Your Life is a fun, hip guide for a new generation.

As I mentioned, Add More ~ing to Your Life was very enlightening.

So much of what Bernstein mentions in her book really made me think, such as the power of the “F” word (forgiving), how mirroring can teach us so much about ourselves, and the potential of quantum shifting to make me a better person.

One part of the book which really hit home focused on releasing romantic illusions. It gave a very powerful example of a situation in which a woman's friend showed up really late to a concert and she wasn’t upset with her friend when she finally arrived. However, later she imagined that if it were a date instead of a friend, she would be so livid if he had shown up late!

This really made me stop and think, and now I know I need to lighten up and treat DH with more respect, as I would a friend.

Add More ~ing to Your Life also offered a lot of great tips and examples of what to do for the Rethinking, Moving, and Receiving steps. Whether it’s aerobic exercise, meditating, or journaling, each step is performed with a purpose.

I just finished the book two days ago, but I know by implementing and applying the steps, I will be on my way to an even more amazing life!
