Sage and Savvy Updates

It's been a hectic couple of months...

Baby was born, Musician was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, and just the craziness of everything else that needs to be done or taken care of has really been affecting me.

I know I'm fortunate for all that I have, I just wish I could find the energy and sanity to balance everything...

Blog-wise, I just wanted to let you all know that due to a lot of inquiries, I will be allowing multiple tweets for any new giveaways effective today (some entrants have been tweeting more than once per giveaway, and those comments were not considered "eligible"), so please read the entry information carefully for the update!

Thank you all for continuing to read and comment on posts, and enter giveaways, and for all the sponsors who continue to offer products for reviews and giveaways.

Sage and Savvy would not be in existence without you all!

TASSIMO T20 Home Brewing System Review

Not too long ago I posted a giveaway of the TASSIMO T20 Home Brewing System, and I was fortunate to recently receive one!
· TASSIMO T20 by Bosch makes it convenient for everyone to enjoy their favorite coffeehouse-style beverages-- from coffees, espresso, cappuccinos and lattes to tea and hot chocolate, without leaving the comfort of home.
· Insert T Disc, each T Disc has a bar code that tells the brewer the exact temperature, pressure and time it takes to brew a perfect drink every time.
· Tassimo enables individuals and families to enjoy the perfect cup of their favorite brewed beverage whenever they like.
· The TASSIMO T20 by Bosch is the perfect no-fuss gift offering more than 40 beverage and flavor varieties to satisfy everyone. From brands you know, like Gevalia, Maxwell House, Twinings and more. The T20’s slimmer design is perfect for apartments, dorm rooms and countertops.

Honestly, I'm horrible at making coffee.  My former bosses would always make their own coffee because I could never make it right, but the TASSIMO T20 makes it so simple and easy.

I decided to put it through a "true" test, however, with a friend who LOVES coffee.  She had already heard so many good things about the TASSIMO, and it turns out, everything she heard about it was true.  Here is what she liked about the TASSIMO T20:
  • The option to make specialty drinks such as lattes, and cappucinos with steamed milk that is conveniently packed in T Discs.
  • Great variety of coffee and other specialty drinks available online.
  • Small and compact; does not take up much counter space.
  • Easy to use and set up.
The only real dislike about the TASSIMO was how it can be quite loud in the morning when brewing.

If you want an easy and convenient way to make coffee, espresso, or lattes, the TASSIMO T20 may be just what you're looking for!

Shop: You can purchase the TASSIMO T20 at select Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, Kohls, Macy’s and select specialty stores as well as tassimodirect.com (ARV $129.99).

Thank you to the sponsor for providing the product for review free of charge.  All opinions are my own.  I received no monetary compensation for this post.

Birthday Party Themes

First birthday parties are huge in Hawaii--planning one is like planning a wedding!

Most first birthday parties take place at a hotel or banquet hall, include a couple of hundred guests, and have lots of entertainment (magicians, balloon artists, etc.).

The problem I had with Musician and Smiley's birthday parties was coming up with a theme.  For Musician, we ended up with a safari animals theme, and for Smiley, it was a cookie theme.

Now I have to figure out what kind of theme Baby's 1st birthday party will be.

And I also want to throw a birthday party for Musician and Smiley (their birthdays are one day apart) this year so I want to find a good theme for their party too.

I've seen themes where it was just colors (e.g. pink and brown) or shapes (dots), and of course I've seen lots of character themes...

Have you seen or thrown any parties with a unique theme, or one that was a hit with the kids?

Some of the best ideas come from my fellow bloggers and readers, so hopefully I'll get some good ideas!

Hallmark Postage-Paid Greetings Giveaway

Since Baby arrived, I've been sending out lots of thank you cards, but I got a bit frustrated when I discovered I only had a few stamps on hand, which meant I had to go out and buy more!

Fortunately, Hallmark has a solution for times like these, with their Postage-Paid Greetings!

Hallmark Postage-Paid Greetings feature the U.S. Postal Service’s Intelligent Mail barcode on the front of the envelope. When the cards are processed at a Postal Service facility, the barcode automatically indicates to the Postal Service the postage is paid. The postage is treated like a Forever stamp, and its value will always be equal to the price of a standard First-Class stamp, regardless of when it’s mailed.

I think this makes sending out greetings so convenient!  Especially now that I have a newborn in the house again--the less time I have to spend searching for or buying stamps, the better!

This comes in handy for all the upcoming holidays, such as Mother’s Day!

There are more than 90 Mother’s Day Postage-Paid Greetings to choose from, making it easier to celebrate your mom, mother-in-law, grandma, friend, sister, aunt...

What's great is that there are other Postage-Paid Greetings, so no matter if you need to send a Thank You Card, a Graduation Card, or even a Father's Day Card, Hallmark's Postage-Paid Greetings make it convenient and easy to send a greeting to a loved one!

Shop: Postage-Paid Greetings are sold in Hallmark stores, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, CVS and other Hallmark distribution partners across the country. Mother’s Day Postage-Paid Greetings range from $2.69 - $3.99.

Win:  Two lucky winners will each receive a prize pack of Hallmark Postage-Paid Mother's Day Greetings!

Kids Konserve Signature Waste-Free Lunch Kit Giveaway

Most of us are familiar with the 4 "R"s when it comes to the environment (reduce, reuse, recycle, reconstituting), but Kids Konserve is introducing a 5th "R"--REMEMBER!

It simply comes down to breaking bad habits and REMEMBERING the new ones.

I personally still have a problem with remembering to use reusable bags whenever I go shopping. I've gotten a lot better than before, but there are still times where I forget them, but I will make a better effort to remember to bring them ALL the time.

I need to set a better example for my kids, and there's no better time to start than today...

About Kids Konserve:
The Kids Konserve waste-free lunch kit and other reusable products were the natural outgrowth of what two women saw as a big need that required immediate attention. With the premise that any business they undertook had to help the environment in some way, it didn’t take much imagination to see how they, as parents of young children, were contributing to garbage landfills, pollutants and sending the wrong message to their own children. How could they set an example of conservation for their children and empower them to be the examples of change for the future?

Focusing on how school lunch programs operate opened their eyes and propelled them to create Kids Konserve. Calculating the amount of trash being produced each day at their own schools during the lunch hour alone, shocked them enough to begin more research into reusable products that dramatically cut down on Earth’s ever growing garbage pile.

Win: One lucky winner will receive a Kids Konserve Signature Waste-Free Lunch Kit.

Wayne Brady: Radio Wayne CD Giveaway

Actor, singer and comedian extraordinaire Wayne Brady now adds children’s entertainer to his resume with the release of Radio Wayne, his Walt Disney Records’ debut children’s album. Recreating the world of drive-time radio, Brady plays DJ Wayne on the album, talking to listeners while introducing a hot mix of songs designed help kids with everyday life lessons. Radio Wayne is available exclusively on Amazon.com, then arrives at retailers nationwide and online music stores May 31.

Produced and arranged by the Heavyweights (Jack Kugell, Jamie Jones and Jason Pennock) Radio Wayne features 14 songs, with all of the original tracks co-written by Brady. Touching on a range of musical styles – from jazz and reggae to blues and hip hop – Brady sings about good manners ("Say Please," "Wash Your Hands"), good habits ("Reading Can be Fun," "You Are What You Eat") and just plain having fun ("Hide and Seek," "Hip Hop Stop").

The project was inspired by the good times Brady has shared with his daughter, Maile and his commitment to being a parent.  "In this day and age, kids are far more mature for good and bad than children of any other generation," says Brady. "You have 6-year-olds who can quote Lady Gaga’s lyrics. That’s why I did this CD. I wasn’t happy with a lot of what my daughter was listening to. We decided to make songs that are as dance-worthy as other Top 40 songs.”

Songs on Radio Wayne include:

1.  "Imagination" – a jubilant pop salute to every boy and girl’s greatest asset: their minds.

2.  "The High-Low" – a breezy, hip-hop track about a brand new dance, guaranteed kid- tested and fun.

3.  "Good Morning (All Over the World)" – drawing on languages like Japanese, Italian
and even Hebrew, Wayne teaches kids that simple phrase that makes anyone smile.

4.  "Say Please" -- a funky, James Brown-flavored appeal for common courtesy.

5.  "Talk to the Animals" – Wayne’s mooing, chirping, oinking remake of the Oscar-winning classic from the film "Doctor Doolittle."

6.  "Greedy Gus" – a funny jazz piece about a naughty child who never wants to share.

7.  "Let it Out" - a punchy hip hop song that helps kids deal with angry feelings.

8.  "Reading Can Be Fun" – a touch of Sly Stone graces this upbeat track about the joys of reading.

9.  "Wash Your Hands" – Wayne’s hip-hop take on an important message for kids.

10.  "You Are What You Eat" – a rap about good nutrition.

11.  "The Music Song" – fun never sounded so bluesy, as Wayne and the kids build a song note-by-note, instrument-by-instrument.

12.  "Hide and Seek" – it’s not Outkast, it’s Wayne and the kids playing everyone’s favorite childhood game.

13.  "Monster in My Closet" – what’s the best way to deal with childhood fears? Laugh at them, as Wayne does in this catchy pop gem.

14.  "Hip Hop Stop" – a high-spirited rap version of the old game, Red Light Green Light, wraps up Radio Wayne.

Shop: You can purchase Radio Wayne at http://www.amazon.com/Radio-Wayne-Amazon-com-Exclusive-Brady/dp/B002O4J4ES (SRP $13.27); the nationwide release will be available wherever music is sold on May 31.

Win: Three lucky winners will each receive a copy of Radio Wayne!

Why I Haven't Been Napping When Baby Naps

I've heard that you should nap when your baby naps, but I always find that hard, especially with two other kids that need to be paid attention to.

But recently, something happened that now has me spending hours and hours on the internet researching instead of napping...

Several weeks ago Musician was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).

For those of you unfamiliar to PDD-NOS, like how I was, you can view an explanation here.

I've mentioned before how Musician has been going through speech therapy and how he's in a special education class, but no one--not his therapists, his doctor, or his teachers, ever brought up the possibility of PDD-NOS, so DH and I were quite surprised.

So lately I've been doing a lot of research on therapies, the GFCF diet, and on PDD-NOS itself.

Later I'll go into more detail as to how the diagnosis came about, but in the meantime, if any of you have any blogs detailing your personal experience with PDD-NOS, the GFCF diet, or know of any great online resources, I would love for you to leave me the link!

When Did You Take Your Baby Out?

I remember when Musician was first born, one friend said how she was stir-crazy and had to simply just take her baby out driving since her baby's doctor told her not to take her baby out for 3 months.

Another friend said how her baby's pediatrician said not to take the baby out for 4 months!

I think our pediatrician told us not to take Musician out for three months since he was born during cold and flu season.

So once he hit the three-month mark, we went out to a restaurant to eat.

With Smiley, even though he was born in the same month as Musician, we waited 6 weeks.

We have relatives that took their newborn on a trip at 2 weeks, a friend that took their 1 day old to the grocery store, and others who waited a few months to take baby out.

Do you remember when you first took your baby out?

Celebrate Earth Day with Sid the Science Kid and DVD Giveaway

Environment & Habitat Week is April 18 to 22, and Sid the Science Kid will be airing four episodes in honor of Earth Day (April 22)!

SID THE SCIENCE KID™, the engaging and entertaining animated preschool series that encourages kids to explore and experience science celebrates Earth Day with four new episodes the week of April 18-22, on PBS KIDS (check local listings).

The new episodes each explore a different science theme related to the environment. Sid, the show’s energetic and inquisitive preschool star, begins each episode with a new question and spends a fun-filled day finding answers with help from his friends and family.  Sid and his pals leave the classroom for a field trip to their local science center to investigate and explore in “Where Did The Water Go?” and “Save The Stump.”

“Where Did The Water Go?” (“What happens to water that goes down the drain?”)    Premieres Monday, April 18: While brushing his teeth, Sid wonders what happens to all the dirty water when it goes down the drain.  At The Science Center, Sid and his friends explore how water travels in and out of our homes through pipes.  And here’s something Sid and his friends never realized: there’s lots of water in the world, but you can’t drink it all!  We can only use fresh water, and there aren’t a lot of fresh water sources in the world.  That’s why it’s important not to waste water!

“Clean Air!” (“Why does Sid’s Dad wear a mask when he paints?”): Premieres Tuesday, April 19 and repeats on Earth Day, Friday, April 22: Sid the roving reporter is investigating something strange in his backyard--his Dad is wearing a mask while painting. Sid discovers that his Dad is protecting his face so he doesn’t breathe in the dirty fumes.  At school, Sid and his friends discover that people and animals on Earth need to breathe clean air, and when we pollute the air around us, it affects the air that everyone breathes.  The kids also discover that trees have a really important role in keeping our air clean!

“Reused Robot” (“Where does trash go when we throw it away?") Premieres Wednesday, April 20Sid’s toy robot is broken, so he wants to throw it "away." Sid's Mom tells him there is no such thing as "away," and when we put something in the trash, we are actually creating waste.  Sid and his friends explore the idea that everything we throw away goes somewhere.  This leads to an investigation of how to recycle and reuse items so that we make less trash.

“Save The Stump” (“Can an old stump be a home for tiny creatures?”) Premieres Thursday, April 21: Sid is super excited because his Dad is clearing out space in the yard for a basketball court!  While Sid and Dad are surveying the land, Sid notices a big stump teeming with little creatures!  During a special field trip to The Science Center, Sid and his friends discover that there are animal habitats all around us, even in old stumps, and if one habitat is destroyed, all of the other habitats and animals are affected.

I was fortunate to receive a Sid the Science Kid Environment and Habitat Toolkit which included screeners of the above episodes.

Not only did my boys learn a lot about various aspects of the environment and how to protect it, but I learned a whole lot too!

In Where Did the Water Go, Musician loved when Sid and his friends went on a field trip to The Science Center to learn about water and how even though we're surrounded by lots of water, we can't drink most of it!

In Clean Air, the boys thought it was funny how Sid suggested to use a wagon, scooter, and tricycle instead of a car to help keep the air clean, and it was interesting to find out about the many creatures living in an old tree stump!

Our favorite episode was Reused Robot.  Sid told his friends how all the trash goes in a land fill, and they tried to find ways to reduce their trash.  This episode really got me thinking, because even though we do recycle, it made me realize we could do even more to lessen our trash, and now the boys and I will look for all kinds of old containers and cans to recycle for arts and crafts projects!

Sid and his friends offered a lot of great ideas to help save the environment, and if you want to view some tips from Sid, click here.

Win: One lucky winner will receive a copy of Sid the Science Kid: Going, Going Green DVD!

Thank You Cards

Whenever I or my boys get gifts, I always make sure to send out thank you cards.

No matter what the occasion--birthday, Christmas, or "just-because," I send out thank you cards in the mail.

My boys can't really write yet, so I write the thank you cards for them, but despite that, I think the recipient of the card still appreciates the thank-you.

Most of my friends send out thank you cards too--both for themselves or their kids.

But there are a handful that don't send out any at all.

Do you send out thank you cards?

Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium CD/DVD Set Giveaway (Signed)

Billy Joel - Live At Shea Stadium is available in a 2 CD/1 DVD set as well as a stand-alone DVD and stand-alone Blu-ray.

The full-concert companion to the acclaimed Lionsgate documentary "The Last Play At Shea," Billy Joel Live At Shea Stadium features more than two hours of Billy and his band offering definitive, and often transcendent versions of hits, rarities, deep catalog, personal favorites and crowd-pleasing surprises including duets with guest artists Paul McCartney ("I Saw Her Standing There," "Let It Be"), Tony Bennett ("New York State of Mind"), Garth Brooks ("Shameless") and John Mayer ("This Is The Time") along with exclusive DVD/Blu-ray bonus performances with Steven Tyler ("Walk This Way"), Roger Daltrey ("My Generation") and John Mellencamp ("Pink Houses").

Built in 1964, Shea Stadium was the home of the New York Mets for 45 years. Designed as a multi-purpose stadium, Shea became the birthplace of arena rock when the Beatles appeared there August 15, 1965, establishing the ballpark as a pinnacle venue for rock's biggest names: The Who, The Police, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and others have all played Shea.

Chosen as the last rock act to play the venue, Billy Joel staged his "Last Play At Shea" concerts on July 16 and July 18, 2008, rocking a combined audience of 110,000 fans with one of the most emotionally charged shows ever played at the historic stadium.  After 45 years, two New York Mets World Series victories, the arena debut of The Beatles and Billy Joel's "The Last Play At Shea," the final section of Shea Stadium was torn down in 2009.

Cheerios New Author Contest and Prize Pack Giveaway

Have you ever had the desire to write a children's book, but just didn't know how or where to begin? Well, the Cheerios New Author Contest may just be the motivation you need to help you make your dream of writing a children's book come true!

Through its annual New Author Contest, Cheerios® cereal will make this dream a reality for one aspiring children´s book author. One Grand Prize Winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a possible publishing deal with Simon & Schuster Children´s Publishing, in addition to having his or her book featured inside Cheerios cereal boxes nationwide.

Founded on the belief that reading is a key building block for learning and life, the Cheerios New Author Contest encourages ambitious authors to write and submit an original story, in either English or Spanish, suitable for children ages three to eight. The contest, which is an extension of the Spoonfuls of Stories program, is part of the brand´s ongoing commitment to nurturing the whole child and connecting families by fostering a shared love of reading.

Laurie Isop, of Renton, Wash., won the literary lottery when she was named Grand Prize Winner of the 2009 Cheerios New Author Contest. Those who want to follow in Laurie´s footsteps and think they have the "write" stuff can visit www.spoonfulsofstoriescontest.com through July 15, 2011 to find out more.

Three Minutes of Fear

As most of you know, I ended up having to get induced with DS3, and with the exception of one big heart rate drop, labor went fairly smoothly, and so did the delivery, but it was once DS3 was out that I had one of the biggest scares of my life...

In terms of labor, there was a scary moment where I had to get up to use the bathroom, and when I got up, DH and I noticed DS3's heart rate had dropped.

Drastically.

And in a few seconds a whole bunch of nurses came in, one telling me to lie on my right side, another putting oxygen on me, and I don't even know what the other nurses were doing.  It was a bit of a blur...

This happened with Musician too--his heart rate continuously dropped throughout labor (we found out it was because the umbilical cord was wrapped around his waist), so part of me was not that worried.

In fact, as soon as I went on my left side, DS3's heart rate went back to normal, and it stayed normal throughout the labor.

I was in labor for about 8 hours.  In hour 7 I ended up getting the epidural.  I was in so much pain, and I was only 8 cm at that time.  I thought there was no way I could last until 10 cm.

My doctor broke my water shortly after I got the epidural.

And once he did, I was ready to push.

DS3 came out rather quickly--in just a few sets of pushes.

As soon as he came out, the nurse put him on my chest.

He wasn't crying.

He was purple.

He moved a little, but still wasn't crying.

So after just a few seconds on me, they immediately took him to work on him.

DH and I just watched in silence as the nurses rubbed him and did what they're supposed to do to get him to cry.

Part of me was fearing the worst.

Another part of me was thinking everything would be fine.

But as time passed, the fear grew.

Finally...after THREE MINUTES, he started to cry.

Those three minutes seemed like forever...

But hearing that first cry was one of the sweetest sounds I've ever heard...

NutraSea DHA Giveaway

Now that DS3 is finally here, I keep hearing and reading so much about DHA and how it's important for baby's development, and I recently found out about Ascenta's NutraSea DHA.

Ascenta is a manufacturer and distributor of high quality natural health products and an industry leader in omega-3 fatty acids.

NutraSea DHA, which was just launched, comes from the most eco-friendly and sustainable marine source: wild squid.  Much of the squid is not used for this, and has been regarded as waste, but actually contains 35% more omega-3 than wild salmon and 100% more than krill.  Unlike most fish species, Pacific Squid has dramatically increased in numbers over the last 30 years, and is naturally resistant to overfishing due to an early reproductive age and a very short lifespan.  NutraSea DHA is an ideal choice for pregnant and lactating mothers as well as seniors and individuals with cardiovascular and eye conditions.

Ascenta provides unique transparency and superior quality.  Each lot of product is third-party tested for quality, purity and label claims and the test results are posted online with their Pure Check program, something that no other omega-3 supplement manufacturer offers.

Win: One lucky winner will receive a bottle of NutraSea DHA!

A Day Off - Spend it With Your Kids or Without?

When I was working full-time outside of the home, if I had a day off, I couldn't wait to spend it with my son. I missed him terribly while at work, so any free time I had was almost always spent with him.

However, I've been discovering that I have many friends who are the total opposite. If they have a day off, they don't hesitate to drop their kids off with a sitter or relative so they can spend the day doing whatever he or she wants.

Don't get me wrong--I totally understand how important it is to get "me" time. It's important for your sanity, for your soul, and just for your overall well-being.

But I was shocked by how many of my friends would actually prefer to spend the day without their kids--whether it's simply to just stay at home alone and relax, or go out shopping, or spend time with friends.

It's these same friends who couldn't wait to go back to work while out on maternity leave.

I DREADED going back to work because I knew I would have major separation anxiety. And sure enough, the first week back to work I found myself crying many times because I missed my son.

However, I did enjoy having "me" time, even if it was at work. After all, like a friend told me, "You actually get a REAL lunch break."

I'm not saying that my friends who would rather spend a day off without their kids are bad parents. They're great parents, and again, I totally understand their desire for wanting to take "me" time.

I was just surprised at how many of my friends would rather spend a day off without their kids...

Are you the same way? Am I really in the minority by preferring to spend a day off with my kids versus without?
