Do You Return Your Food?

Not too long ago I went to pick up pizza from a national pizza chain, and the customer in front of me was picking up an order.  Upon seeing that there was a bit of burnt cheese (and I mean a BIT--it was VERY little) on a slice, the customer was visibly upset.  The store manager happened to be assisting this customer and offered to make another pizza, and the customer accepted and waited another 10 minutes for the new pizza.

Now, if it were me, I would not have cared about the tiny bit of burnt cheese.  In fact, I'm sure there were many times I've ordered and eaten pizza with burnt cheese and it didn't even cross my mind to return it.

And I usually never return food that I ordered unless the order is completely wrong (e.g. I once ordered Mahi Mahi and got Shrimp Scampi) or I find something completely disgusting in it (e.g. a bug).

I did have a former boss who was notorious for returning food just about every time she went out to eat.  If the soup was too cold, or the french fries too soggy, or the bread too hard, she had no problems returning the food and asking for exactly what she wanted.

Now, some people may think that she's paying for her food so she deserves to eat good food, exactly how she wants it.

Others may think she's being too picky.

And yet others joke that she's going to get a "surprise" in her food (e.g. something inedible or gross) because of all of her requests.

I know there are things beyond a restaurant's/chef's/server's control, and I know for the most part most servers/chefs have no problems accommodating the customer if there's something wrong with his/her meal, but personally, unless there is something REALLY wrong with my food, I don't even bother returning it, especially since by the time the food comes I'm usually starving and I don't want to wait longer for the meal to be corrected.

What about you--have you ever returned your food?  If so, why?

Have You Ever Taken Anything from a Hotel?

I recently read an article and saw on the news and talk shows about how hotels were getting high-tech and installing tracking devices in their hotel towels, and there was also a lot of discussion about the other kinds of things people would take--from little things like toiletries, to big things like paintings and mirrors.

I'm one of those that usually takes the toiletries--the little bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion.  That's it.

However, there was one time that we did take something else from a hotel-by complete accident.

I promise.

It was actually from the hotel where we got married at.

We stayed overnight after the wedding, and as part of the wedding package, we'd get souvenir champagne glasses to take home.

The evening after the wedding, we had chocolate covered strawberries, champagne, and a couple of champagne glasses delivered to our room (also a part of wedding package).

The next morning, we packed up the champagne glasses that we used the night before to drink the champagne, along with everything else from the wedding (gifts, flowers, left over food, etc.).  We also packed up an unopened gift that was given to us by hotel staff.

When we got home, we opened up the gift from the hotel, and it was the REAL souvenir champagne glasses-with their pretty logo!

Oh my gosh!

I thought the glasses that we used the previous night were our "souvenir champagne glasses."

I just felt so stupid.

My former co-worker now works for the hotel as the security director.  He also attended my wedding, and I know the next time I see him I'm going to have to tell him this story.

Have you ever taken anything from a hotel (accidental or not)?

Annabel Karmel: My Favorite Recipes Review

Annabel Karmel: My Favorite Recipes:
Everyone eats, but not everyone eats well. From main dishes to quick snacks, My Favorite Recipes addresses this problem with more than 40 carefully chosen recipes from children’s cooking guru Annabel Karmel that will feed the whole family while giving children the chance to get mixing and get messy in the kitchen!

I enjoy making food for my boys that are not only healthy, but look fun to eat too, so I loved having the chance to go through Annabel Karmel's My Favorite Recipes Cookbook.

There are just so many recipes that incorporate lots of healthy foods in such a fun way, and what's great is that my boys can easily help make the foods too!

From incorporating veggies into Little Pita Pizzas to make faces or filling delicious crepes full of berries, the recipes in My Favorite Recipes make it easy to eat better.

Our favorite recipe in the book is for Banana Pops.  It's oh-so-simple!  All you need are bananas, chocolate, and sprinkles.

Just cut the bananas into big slices, cover in chocolate, and add sprinkles!  In the book, colorful straws were used to poke through the banana pops, but since we didn't have any colorful straws, we stuck the banana pops on chopsticks.

I love how there are so many simple recipes, and the directions are easy to follow.  I also love how the recipes have color photographs.

But what I like best of all is how the recipes in My Favorite Recipes can be followed with my kids, making them excited to eat the finished product, and the recipes end up "our" favorite recipes!

Fiber One Gift Pack Giveaway

I often hear and read about how many people do not get enough daily fiber, but fortunately there are more and more delicious ways to get fiber, such as through the products from Fiber One.

Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Bars and Brownies can often be found in my home, and now thanks to MyBlogSpark, I was able to try some other Fiber One Cereals that really were delicious, making it easy to get more fiber into my daily diet.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans say people should consume 25-38 grams of fiber daily, and that the average American consumes only 15 grams. What´s amazing is that incorporating fiber into your diet can be effortless and definitely delicious, with Fiber One cereals offering at least 30 percent of the Daily Value per serving. (Some Fiber One cereals offer more than 50 percent!) Fiber One Original® and flavored varieties like Honey Clusters®, Raisin Bran Clusters®, Caramel Delight®, and Shredded Wheat®, make fiber taste good and help to give people a jumpstart on their fiber intake each day.

I was fortunate to receive a Fiber One cereal gift pack that included the following boxes of Fiber One cereal: Original®, Honey Clusters®, Raisin Bran Clusters®, Caramel Delight®, and Shredded Wheat ®.

I've already tried a few of the cereals, but since I didn't try the Caramel Delight and Raisin Bran Clusters before, I decided to eat those first.

Initially I didn't think I would like the Caramel Delight cereal because I usually don't like anything with caramel, often thinking it's too sweet.  However, I was pleasantly surprised with how good the Caramel Delight cereal was.  It had just the right amount of sweetness, and what was even more surprising was how much Smiley liked it too (he's SUCH a picky eater!).

The Raisin Bran Clusters cereal was also really good, but the Caramel Delight was my favorite.

Fiber One really makes it easy and delicious for me to get more fiber into my diet!

Win: One lucky winner will receive a Fiber One Gift Pack to include boxes of the following Fiber One cereal: Original®, Honey Clusters®, Raisin Bran Clusters®, Caramel Delight®, and Shredded Wheat ®.

Animal Atlas: Animal ABC's and Animal 123's DVDs Review and Giveaway

Introduce preschoolers to letters and numbers using the amazing animal kingdom! Animal ABCs and Animal 123’s strengthens letter, number and animal name recognition by teaching children about animals from around the globe. Sing along as we explore Earth’s animals, from the cute and cuddly to the wild and wonderful. These DVDs include fun facts, unique songs and a bonus sections with flashcards. Practicing your ABCs and 123s has never been so fun!

Musician and Smiley both really enjoyed Animal ABC's and 123's for a variety for a variety of reasons.

They loved seeing all the different animals and they really liked how the various songs were sung to tune of one of their favorite songs, Pop Goes the Weasel.

They had a lot of fun counting, reciting the alphabet, and singing along with Alphabet Andy and Numbers Newton.

I thought it was neat how in Animal ABC's, many of the animals were described with adjectives that started with the same letter as the animal, such as "darling deer" or "careful caribou."

I also thought it was great how information about different animals' features, behaviors, etc. were discussed.

My boys were thoroughly entertained watching Animal ABC's and Animal 123's.  They now have a lot of new knowledge about different animals, have learned a lot of new words, and I know Baby will have a lot of fun watching it too once he's old enough!

Shop: You can purchase Animal ABC's and Animal 123's beginning July 12 on the NCircle Entertainment website or at various other retailers online and nationwide (SRP $9.99 each).

Win: One lucky winner will receive Animal ABC's and Animal 123's!

Momotaro iPhone App Review

Growing up, Momotaro was a very popular book that would I'd often read during elementary school, so when I found out it's now available through TouchyBooks in the iTunes App store, I couldn't wait for my boys to discover the story.

What makes this app even more special is how it is a UNICEF book app, and $1.21 of the $1.99 cost of the app will be donated to UNICEF's relief efforts in Japan.

Popular kids’ bookstore app TouchyBooks has combined its efforts with the UNICEF office in Spain to create “Momotaro,” the first UNICEF interactive children’s book app for the iPhone and iPad in order to teach kids about the importance of helping those in need and of being resolute in the face of challenges - all while raising money and awareness for UNICEF’s work in Japan. All of TouchyBook’s profits from the sale of the eBook will be donated to fund UNICEF’s disaster relief efforts for children in Japan.

As a child-focused book publisher, when the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11, the TouchyBooks team knew that younger children often feel helpless and cannot understand the situation as it evolves around them. “Stories have been used since the beginning of time to help children understand the world around them. 'Momotaro' is a great story for parents whose child has seen or heard information about the tragedy in Japan, but might be too small to comprehend the enormity of disasters or their role,” said Raul Soriano, author of Momotaro.

Momotaro tells the story of the title character, a young Japanese boy who is found floating down a large river, sleeping inside a giant peach. Momotaro grows up to become the strongest and bravest boy in Japan, and when an evil demon comes to his village and steals all the food and belongings of the townspeople, it is up to Momotaro to find the monster and reclaim their possessions.

We all enjoyed Momotaro.

We'd choose the Read to Me option and the boys would have fun touching the screen to see birds fly, insects crawl, and other actions, and they also liked seeing all the different creatures that Momotaro came across during his journey, all of which eventually helped Momotaro in his quest at the end.

I personally liked the vivid images and the background music, how the story was just the right length to keep my boys' attention, and of course, I liked the lessons the story taught as well.

It's great that my boys can be exposed to stories from other cultures, and the TouchyBooks Momotaro app does just that, and also brings back fond memories from reading the story during elementary school

Shop:  You can purchase Momotaro $1.99 for the iPhone and iPad and available worldwide from the iTunes App Store in the Education section.

Operation: Cars 2 Edition Review and Giveaway

In just a few days, Cars 2 will be released in theaters, and my boys can't wait (I admit, I can't wait too!).

And now they're even more excited to watch Cars 2 after playing Operation: Cars 2 Edition!

Help your Mater “patient” get “all better!” Pick a card and then “operate” on that part of him to help him out. Remove the bad parts and you’ve done it! But if you touch the sides, his headlight will buzz and glow. Keep working on him until his as “healthy” as can be, then put the funatomy parts in the storage drawer to keep everything together. “Fix up” his “busted gear” and you win!

Includes gameboard with Mater “Patient” and tweezers, 22 game cards, 11 plastic funatomy parts, play money, storage drawer and instructions.

As soon as we showed the boys the box they both yelled "Mater!" (Smiley's favorite character). They couldn't wait to play, but first DH set everything up--removing the Funatomy pieces from the frame, opening up the cards, inserting the batteries, etc.--it was really quick.

Then it was time to play!  There are Doctor cards which are drawn which notify you which part to remove and how much money you can earn.  If unsuccessful, a Specialist can try to remove it for double the amount of money.  Play continues until all 11 Funatomy parts are removed and the person with the most money wins!

DH showed Musician how to use the tweezers to pick up Mater's parts, and the first time he saw the light go off and heard Mater laugh he just laughed out loud himself!  And so did Smiley.

Everyone had a blast playing Operation: Cars 2, especially the boys.

I like how the openings are big enough to make it easy for the boys to grab the Funatomy parts with the tweezer, but they're still small enough to ensure Mater can often be heard laughing and screaming.

I also like how there is a storage drawer to store all the Funatomy parts.

Ultimately, the thing I like most about Operation: Cars 2 Edition is seeing my boys laugh whenever Mater's headlight lights up and he hollers.  We usually end up not counting all the money to see who won--we simply have fun removing all the parts so we can hear Mater make some noise!

Operation: Cars 2 Edition is a great game that our entire family loves to play!

Shop:   You can purchase Oepration: Cars 2 Edition at various retailers online and nationwide (SRP $19.99)

Win: One lucky winner will receive Operation: Cars 2 Edition!

Father’s Day Dino Breakfast Menu Ideas and Dinosaur Train All Aboard Game Giveaway

June 19 is Father’s Day, and the clan from Dinosaur Train would love to help you celebrate!

Why not kick off Father’s Day starting with a special Dino Breakfast, made especially for Dad! Then, Buddy recommends that everyone have some Dino Fun and play The Dinosaur Train All Aboard Game

So to start the day, here are some healthy, easy-to-make menu ideas to prepare with your child! Explain that he/she is going to help to prepare a special breakfast for Dad that could be served "All Aboooooooooard – the Dinosaur Train!"

T.rex Footprint Pancakes – with adult help, children shape the batter into the large three-toed feet of a Tyrannosaurus.

Paleontologist Pancakes – make small pancakes, then stack them up 5 or 6 high (maybe putting apple sauce or sour cream between them), and hiding “fossils” between the layers – the fossils being pieces of strawberry, banana slices, chocolate chips, and so on.

Stegosaurus Smoothie – a colorful, healthy fruit smoothie made with a blend of yogurt, a frozen banana, and any other fruit you wish. Serve it on a dish with a rim. In the middle of the dish, place a line of triangular fruit pieces – such as pineapple, apples, or cantaloupe. These little fruity triangles will look like the plates on a stegosaurus’ back.

Triceratops Eggs – scrambled eggs that have “horns” sticking out of them – made of breadsticks.

Your child can write and design the menu to announce all the tasty food they will be serving (You can help your younger ones to do the writing, of course!) And before preparing any food, have a discussion about safety in the kitchen. What are some jobs that are good for kids to do? What jobs should be handled by an adult?

You can also show your child a clip from Gilbert the Junior Conductor in which the Pteranadon Family enjoys eating breakfast on the Dinosaur Train at the following link: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/artscraftscooking/dinobreakfast.html

Then, everyone can gather round to play The Dinosaur Train All Aboard Game! In this game, players will choose a character – Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, Don, Cory, Tank or Mr. Conductor – and try to move the fastest along the tracks. Speed through the three dinosaur eras: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous along the beautiful scenery. Special Stopwatch spaces will help you get closer to the nest, while Dinosaur Crossing spaces will send you back. The first player to reach the nest area in the center of the board wins. (For 2 to 6 players ages 4+; SRP $12.00).

To finish off your fun Father’s Day, you might want to go on a nature hike. You’ll need a high-energy snack for the road! Explain that paleontologists sometimes have to explore remote areas, so ask kids to create a mix of healthy nuts, dried fruit, and maybe dried cereal to make Dad’s Favorite Trail Mix!

IMPORTANT: Before serving any of these dishes, make sure that no one is allergic to any of the ingredients, or should not eat particular foods because of a family dietary practice, such as vegetarianism.

Win: One lucky winner will receive the Dinosaur Train All Aboard Game!
