The Essential Guide to Baby's First Year Book Review

Even though I already had two kids, when I gave birth to Baby just a few months ago, I still had so many worries and questions despite having gone through the newborn/infant stages twice before.

To help me with all of my questions and concerns was a handy guide, The Essential Guide to Baby's First Year by Erika Landau, MD and Abigail Brenner, MD.

Everything I wanted to know I could find in The Essential Guide to Baby's First Year.

Whether I was looking up feedings, development, sleep, or rashes, I found a lot of great information in the book.

A lot of the information was a "refresher," and there was also some information that I didn't see in any of the other newborn/infant parenting books I had when Musician was born.  For instance, there was information on Autism, and this information would've come in really handy when Musician was growing up, as it may have been able to help us earlier identify his eventual diagnosis on the spectrum.

There are a lot of great references in the book, such as what you should stock in your medicine cabinet or first aid kit, an immunization schedule, what to look for in a daycare, and so much more.

I also really like the "Essential Takeaways" at the end of each chapter, which summarizes the important information from each chapter.

My favorite aspect of the book is how it features several recipes, including some vegetarian/vegan recipes, like the one below!

The Essential Guide to Baby's First Year truly is an essential book for new moms or even moms like me who already have other children, and I know I'm going to be referring to the book continuously as Baby grows.

Vegetarian-Vegan Fruit Compote

Ingredients:
-1 apple, cored and sliced
-1 plum, sliced
-1 peach, peeled and sliced
-1 slice of lemon
-Pinch of cinnamon
-2 tsp. brown sugar
-2 cups water

Boil water with the sugar and cinnamon. Add the fruits and cook until they are soft. Squeeze the slice of lemon over the mixture. Cool. Serve as is or on top of a waffle or pancake (A great breakfast option).

Shop: You can purchase The Essential Guide to Baby's First Year at various retailers online and nationwide (SRP $16.95)

First Dog DVD Review

First Dog is a Dove-approved, award-winning family film featuring original music by Dolly Parton. In it, A foster boy leads an inspiring journey across the country to return a lost dog to its rightful owner—the President of the United States of America, played by Eric Roberts.

The story begins when “The First Dog,” Teddy, is accidentally left behind after the President appears at a dedication ceremony.

Thousands of miles from home, the dog is found by a young boy, Danny Milbright, who discovers that Teddy belongs to the President of the United States – but no one believes him.

And so begins an exciting road adventure filled with hardships, friendships and suspense, as Danny runs away from his foster home to return The First Dog to the White House -- because, “It’s the right thing to do!

I was very surprised, but my boys really loved this movie.  I didn't think they would enjoy it since it's not an animated movie, but they thoroughly enjoyed it (they watched it TWICE the first day we got it!), and it's mostly because of one of the leading co-stars, Teddy the dog!

They just loved it whenever Teddy was onscreen, whether he was pretending to be in "Dancing with the Dogs" or when Danny put him in the dishwasher to hide him.

The connection between Danny and Teddy was very cute, and it was fun to watch their adventures as they made their way to the White House.

I was really interested to see how Danny and Teddy would make it to the White House all alone, and although many aspects about the movie were far-fetched (Danny's foster-mom not calling the number on the dog tag, catching rides with strangers, taking bullets out of a gun, etc.), the overall lessons of the story--to do the right thing despite no one else believing in you and returning what isn't yours, were important motivators and it was great to see how Danny, Teddy, and a few surprising people he met along the way came together to make sure Teddy was returned to the President.

I liked how there were many moments of comic relief throughout the movie, and I thought the soundtrack was very fitting.

Overall I thought First Dog was a touching movie that taught some great lessons, and I know my boys can't wait to watch it again!

Shop: You can purchase First Dog at various retailers online and nationwide beginning September 6 (SPR $14.98).

Toweligator Giveaway

Conceptualized during a windy beach trip, DiMart, LLC. has invented the must-have beach and travel accessory for the summer - the Toweligator®.
At some point, every beachgoer has experienced trouble with the wind ripping away their beach towel or struggled with trying to hang that wet suit or beach towel up to dry on less-than ideal surfaces.

Originally designed to hold your beach towel securely in place, either in the sand or on your beach chair, the Toweligator’s practical uses are endless (beach, pool, boat, etc).

The Toweligator is a bendable alligator beach clamp that grips tightly with its mouth onto a beach towel or accessory and wraps firmly with its tail to secure it down into the sand or to a chair.

Unlike common one-use towel holders, because of the distinctive and patented bendable tail design, you can also stick it straight into the beach to keep cell phones, reading glasses, or ipods safe from the sand. The strong gator-grip jaws ensure your belongings stay where you put them.

The Toweligator is the newest and best solution for all that frustration at the beach, the pool….and everywhere in between.

Shop: You can purchase the Toweligator on the Toweligator website (SRP $14.95)

Win: One lucky winner will receive the Toweligator!

DH colors with him too, and they both think it's so neat whenever the colors "magically" appear on the pages.

The Crayola Mess Free Color Wonder Set helps him with his fine motor skills as he practices his coloring and it fosters his imagination, which is important not only for Kindergarten, but for other grade levels too.

Aurora Sotfy Soakers Review and Giveaway

Aurora World Inc. (www.auroragift.com), celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, is releasing a plush collection that loves diving into water in the summer as much as kids do.

Simply place Softy Soakers in water and the plush expands from practically nothing into a full size, eight-inch plush animal. The initial collection includes the "Fanta-Sea" plush assortment, and based on the response from buyers at this year's winter shows, Aurora sees a huge hit in the making.

"Everyone who came to our booths or showrooms earlier this year inquired about these H20-friendly toys," says Michael Kessler, SVP of sales and marketing. "With Softy Soakers, kids have a new way to experience their plush animals and don't have to wait long for the toy to 'grow up'," Kessler says. "Softy Soakers are good to go in about 40 seconds. They don't take 72 hours to become full size, like some other products on the market."

The "Fanta Sea" collection (MSRP: $10 each) includes a sea horse, octopus, hammerhead shark, dolphin, sea turtle and alligator. "All you have to do is fill a bowl with water and drop in the Softy Soaker. We suggest massaging it for speedy water absorption. Then after 40 seconds, grab a towel, "rub-a-dub-dub" it dry and you're ready for some fun." Kessler adds it is a relatively simple process for any child, mom or dad and a great toy for the summer months.

We were fortunate to receive the Turtle Softy Soakers.

It was cute as is, but my boys couldn't wait to see it grow.

After putting it in water for approximately 40 seconds and then drying it off, it turned into a "3D" Turtle!
I actually expected it to get a lot bigger, but my boys didn't mind--they loved playing with it and were so excited to watch it grow!

It's great the Softy Soakers grew really quickly and my boys were happy to have such a cute turtle to play with!

There are many other animals in the Softy Soakers Fanta-Sea collection - simply another line of fun toys from Aurora World!

Win: One lucky winner will receive a random Softy Soakers!

The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails DVD Review and Giveaway

Join Garfield and Odie on a fun-filled Halloween escapade when The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails arrives on DVD August 23 from Vivendi Entertainment. This uproarious collection includes six Halloween-themed episodes filled with spooky fun and high jinks from the fan-favorite series currently airing on The Cartoon Network. Voted favorite comic strip character by Nickelodeon Magazine readers, Garfield continues to delight audiences of all ages. The CGI-animated cartoon is based on Jim Davis’ multiple award-winning comic strip and follows the hilarious antics of the world-famous flabby tabby and his affable canine friend Odie.

Synopsis:

Follow the witty and silly duo as they run into spooky trouble again! It’s all fun and games for Garfield and Odie as they take a fun-filled trip on Halloween until Garfield is mistaken by a loose wild cat! Includes other out-of-this-world adventures!

I've always enjoyed reading Garfield comics and watching Garfield cartoons, and my boys finally got introduced to Garfield through the DVD The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails.

Smiley really enjoyed watching Garfield and Odie in the various episodes.

He really liked the Orange and Black episode, which featured Catzilla.  He thought it was funny how Jon thought Odie ate all the fruit and how he wondered why the light switch was so furry.

He also enjoyed the Mastermind episode.  He just thought Garfield's purple helmet was so funny-looking.

I liked the DVD too--Garfield is just so funny in a sarcastic way that makes him appealing to so many adults.

There's a lot of humor that only adults or older kids may understand, but the DVD was still enjoyable for my boys.

If you love Garfield or you want to get a head start on Halloween gifts, Spooky Tails is an ideal DVD to get!

Shop: You can purchase The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails DVD at various retailers online and nationwide (SRP $14.93).

Win: One lucky winner will win a copy of The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails!

Ragu - Mom's the Word on Dinner - $20 Visa Gift Card Giveaway

One of my boys' favorite meals to eat is spaghetti, and I love making it too, especially since it's so simple and tasty.

I just boil the pasta, add some veggies, chicken, and Ragu (our favorite is the Chunky Garden Combination), and top with some cheese!

Dinner usually goes pretty smoothly, especially when we serve our boys' favorite meals, like spaghetti, but sometimes there are those nights when they just refuse to eat for whatever reason.

You know what I'm talking about, right?

I know many parents can relate, and you can check out a video, “When Dinner Gets Tough,” on the Ragu Facebook page to see what other moms do when dinner gets tough in their homes.

Musician usually never gives us a hard time during dinner, but Smiley often refuses to eat.  When this happens, DH or I will pretend to start eating his food, and then he'll say "NO!" and he'll start eating it himself.

I'm sure everyone has their own way of dealing with those nights when dinner gets tough, so check out the When Dinner Gets Tough video and see if you agree with the moms or maybe you can post some of your own tips!

Win: One lucky winner will receive a $20 Visa Gift Card!

Organa Kids: Castle Farm Volume 1 and Happy Valley Volume 1 DVDs Review and Giveaway

Children’s animated stories are brought to life in the launch of two new, delightful animated DVDs series – Castle Farm and Happy Valley, which reach out to preschool children to engage their imaginations, amuse and entertain and at the same time teach lessons to last a lifetime by relating to them on their own level. The first volumes of each title settle onto DVD August 30, 2011 from Organa Kids, a company dedicated to bringing the very best in children’s animation and television from around the world to U.S. audiences on DVD and digital download.

Like a child’s drawing brought to life, Castle Farm is a gentle series from England full of color and colorful characters. Join Farm Girl, Piggy, Leonard, Farmer and all the barnyard animals as they solve mysteries, fix things, get chores done, play games and learn lessons about friendship, responsibility and having fun. Each vignette is filled with its own tiny adventure that will engage youngsters again and again.

Castle Farm Volume 1 includes the episodes “Snails,” “The Carrot Thief,” “Ball Games,” “A Windy Day,” “Amber,” “The Prickly Flower,” “Bubbles,” “Trophy” and “Waiting for Winnie.”

Happy Valley, a charming series also from England, is set in a beautiful countryside by the sea. Using traditional and contemporary nursery rhymes and songs, each episode tells a story about the children who live in the valley as they learn about the world around them. Whether taking a school trip, visiting grandparents, or a simple walk in nature, the tales are endearing and captivating and appeal to even the youngest of viewers. Happy Valley Volume 1 contains the episodes “Rain is Tumbling,” “There You Are, Blackbird,” “Tree on the Hill,” “Where Are You Hiding?,” “Autumn Leaves,” Gee Up Little Horsie,” Wakey, Wakey!,” “Far, Far Away” and Little Donkey.”

Smiley had a lot of fun watching Castle Farm Volume 1 and Happy Valley Volume 1.

In Castle Farm, he learned all about snails and he liked pointing out all of the different farm animals.

Happy Valley was his favorite of the two DVDs.

The nursery school setting was more appealing to him, as he listened very attentively to what the children and teacher said in the episodes.

He learned a lot about the weather and birds, along with many other subjects, but what he really loved about the episodes on the Happy Valley DVD were the songs.  Each episode had a song and once the song started he'd often dance or sway to the music.

I thought the characters in Happy Valley were cute and I liked how we were introduced to new terms that are commonly used in England, such as "ice lolly."

Smiley enjoyed watching both DVDs and he learned a lot from the characters on Castle Farm and Happy Valley!

Shop: You can purchase Castle Farm and Happy Valley DVDs on the Organa Kids website (SRP: $14.95 each)

Win: One lucky winner will receive the Castle Farm Volume 1 and Happy Valley Volume 1 DVDs!

ACTIVATE Giveaway

For us, taking vitamins every day had become more hassle than it was worth. Swallowing horse pills and dumping supplement powders into water bottles was just not cutting it.

We looked to vitamin-enhanced waters for an answer, but found labels filled with empty promises. In our search for something better, we made a discovery that demanded attention.

At first, it seemed like nothing more than a convenient way to take your vitamins on the go – a cap that featured a moisture-resistant compartment inside where ingredients could be stored and released before drinking. Nice idea. But as we began to research the advantages of keeping the active ingredients separate from the water, we realized there was a significant health and wellness benefit.

According to our research conducted in partnership with an independent analytical laboratory, vitamins and other ingredients lose their potency sitting in water. By storing the active ingredients inside the unique cap, separate from the water, the ingredients stayed powerful, fresh and offered the convenient, all-in-one delivery method we were seeking.

On that day, ACTIVATE was born – an all-natural product that contains 0 grams of sugar, 0 calories, no preservatives, and is naturally sweetened with Stevia. Activate provides real refreshment, great taste, and a fresh dose of vitamins --Delivered with a twist in a 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottle. A Turn for the Better.

Anders & Burke, Founders

Recently ACTIVATE encouraged people to make a turn for the better and get active by setting up a vending machine operating on human energy instead of quarters.

Passersby pedaled an exercise bike attached to the vending machine for thirty seconds to release a free bottle of ACTIVATE. 1,250 bottles were distributed, the retail value of which will donated to Nourish America in support of nutrition for pregnant women. The final donation amount totaled $2,240.

Shop: Click here to find a store near you that carries ACTIVATE.

Win: One lucky winner will receive two bottles of Activate (winner's choice of flavors).

Mega Bloks - Dinosaur Train Buddy Set Review

My boys love Mega Bloks, and they were fortunate to recently receive the Mega Bloks Dinosaur Train Buddy Set!

Give your little Dinosaur Train fan the chance to join everyone’s favorite T-Rex Buddy to meet, explore, and have adventures with all kinds of friendly dinosaurs aboard The Dinosaur Train! Sit bobble head Buddy in his Dinosaur Train passenger car and get ready to find out all about his favorite prehistoric friends with the included fun and informative dinosaur fact card!

As soon as I opened the box of Mega Bloks set Musician kept asking to "play Dinosaur Train please!"

After I gave him the pieces, he put them together and played, and when Smiley asked to play with the Mega Bloks, Musician was very good and shared!

Even though the Buddy Mega Bloks set is only a few pieces, Smiley couldn't wait to put Buddy in the train car and make him ride on the "train track" on a Mega Bloks table that we already had.

It was funny watching Buddy's head bobble around as he went around and around the track.

Smiley even built tunnels with other Mega Bloks pieces, and made Buddy climb up Mega Bloks mountains!

There are other Dinosaur Train Mega Bloks sets, items that I'm sure will be on the boys' holiday lists this year!

Shop: You can purchase the Dinosaur Train Buddy Mega Bloks set at Amazon, Kmart and Toys”R”Us (SRP $6.99).

More Mommy Guilt

Over the summer I had all 3 boys with me each and every day.

What really made it difficult was how I was unable to spend quality time with each child as much as I wanted to.

If I was reading to Smiley, Musician would need help with something.

If I was feeding baby, Smiley would want me to play with with  him.

If I was doing homework with Musician, baby would be fussy lying on the playmat wanting some attention.

It made me feel so guilty.

It's similar to how I felt when I was working full-time and I had to leave Musician with his sitters while I went to work.

If you have more than one child, do you ever feel the same way about not spending enough quality one-on-one time with each child?

Do you plan special one-on-one time?

Beyblade: Metal Fusion Volume 4 DVD Review and Giveaway

Only the brave stand between the world and the forces of true evil in BEYBLADE: Metal Fusion Vol. 4, spinning onto DVD August 23 from Nelvana Enterprises and Vivendi Entertainment. From Nelvana and d-rights Inc., BEYBLADE: Metal Fusion chronicles the epic battle with the Dark Nebula in a fresh take on the original hit BEYBLADE. Only Gingka, the courageous hero with an in-depth knowledge of the Beyblade, and his loyal friends can prevent sinister forces from conquering their world.

BEYBLADE: Metal Fusion continues to grow in popularity, having already spawned a successful toy line from Hasbro and an action-packed video game for the Nintendo DS™ and Wii™. The new season of the popular series will debut this year on Cartoon Network, along with new toys from Hasbro and a new videogame.

The BEYBLADE: Metal Fusion Vol. 4 DVD includes an exclusive code unlocking special features, including the ability to battle other Beybladers on Beybladebattles.com.

Synopsis:
The battle between good and evil is even more intense and dangerous than ever as Gingka and his friends face a villain with a plot to unleash a long forbidden Beyblade in his quest to take over the world.

My boys were somewhat familiar with Beyblade after seeing so many of the commercials, so it was no surprise that when I started Beyblade: Metal Fusion Volume 4, they were really intrigued and glued to the TV.

Each episode was very interesting, as the boys seemed to get sucked into watching the Beyblade battles, and I admit--I got sucked in too!

It was fun watching the battles, the different Beyblades, and their special moves, such as the Gale Force Wall and Flame Claw.

Whenever the battles would start Smiley would yell "Go, go, go!" and when one of the Beyblades started to get damaged or weak, he'd yell "Oh no!"

He would also root for different Beyblades simply by their color- his favorite was always the "Blue" one!

I found the battles quite exciting myself, and a lot of it had to do with the WBBA announcer--he had such enthusiasm!

I also found it interesting how there seemed to be a lot of science involved, as the characters constantly talked about balance, wind speed, performance, etc. when it came to the Beyblades battles.

If you or your kids are fans of Beyblade or Japanese Manga series in general, Beyblade Metal Fusion is a great DVD to add to your collection!

Shop: You can purchase Beyblade: Metal Fusion Volume 4 at various retailers online and nationwide beginning August 23 (SRP $14.97).

Win: One lucky winner will receive a copy of Beyblade: Metal Fusion Volume 4!

Chloraseptic Prize Pack Giveaway

Summer is the time for sunshine, green grass, sports, swimming, camp and vacation travel in the glory of warm weather. However for millions, summer sore throat can ruin even the sunniest of days.

The makers of Chloraseptic® sore throat relief products, in conjunction with TABS Group, an independent consumer analytics company, recently announced the findings of the 2011 Survey on Sore Throats. The study of nearly 1,000 people was commissioned to explore today’s wide-ranging causes of sore throat pain and the remedies people use to treat them. the survey revealed information their causes— which was largely non-medical and activity-based.

Despite the seasonal summer effects that cause sore throat pain, the survey revealed information about other causes—non-medical and activity-based causes of sore throat pain. Whereas 72% of respondents listed allergies, cold and the flu as having caused sore throats, the prevalence of other summer activity-based sore throats was not far behind. The survey suggests that sports fans, and screaming parents and camp counselors should be armed with sore throat remedies. Twenty-eight percent of respondents suffered from sore throat pain due to cheering and screaming.

The survey also found that 54% percent of respondents have sore throat pain caused by dry air. The summer season is a busy time for flights, sports trips and other outdoor and high-altitude activities. Those activities, combined with air conditioning, heighten people’s exposure to dryness resulting in sore throats.

“The findings are a testament to the fact that during the warm months allergies, colds and the flu are not the only causes for sore throat pain; rather there are many other causes as well,” said Jean Boyko, PhD., Vice President Science & Technology for Prestige Brands, maker of Chloraseptic® products. “That is why it is important to always have OTC products like sore throat lozenges and sprays on hand.”

The 2011Chloraseptic® Survey on Sore Throats polled a representative sample of 903 respondents, 444 of whom were male, 459 of whom were female. Here are other key findings:

  • People under 30 are over 80% more likely to have sore throat pain caused by too much partying
  • Dry air was the most commonly-cited cause for sore throats outside of any cold or the flu, as listed by 65% of respondents
  • Dehydration was cited by 18% of respondents
  • 55% of respondents listed throat pain relief as the top reason for buying a particular sore throat remedy brand, followed by 38% saying they buy a particular brand because it works instantly
Perfect for easing the irritating sore throat symptoms are the Chloraseptic liquid-center lozenges and spray bottles. Chloraseptic® Sore Throat Lozenges are the only medicated sore throat remedy that have a soothing dual-sensory solid shell with liquid medicine in the center. Because the menthol acts as a soothing agent, the lozenges also help ease nasal passages and fight coughs. The Lozenges come in flavors like Cherry, Citrus, Honey Lemon and Green Tea (made with real honey), so every member your family can enjoy their favorite flavor. The Chloraseptic Lozenge Line is available in 15 and 18 count packs with a suggested retail price of $3.99.

The Chloraseptic® Spray come in great flavors such as Cherry, Menthol and Soothing Citrus in 6.0 oz bottle. The line also includes a grape-flavored Kids strength formula as well as a smaller Maximum Strength spray that comes in a 1.0 oz portable bottle all at a suggested retail price of $6.25. A pocket pump version of the #1 Chloraseptic® Cherry Spray is also available in a 0.67 oz package that is easy to carry anywhere for sore throat relief at a suggested retail price of $2.75.

Blurb Photo Book Review

I love creating photo books for myself and for gifts, and I recently made a photo book through Blurb for a relative's birthday gift.

Blurb is a company and a community that believes passionately in the joy of books – reading them, making them, sharing them, and selling them.

Holding a finished book with your name on the cover is a truly amazing feeling; it’s one of those experiences everyone should have. As software people, designers, and publishing professionals at the top of our game, we realized something both incredible and obvious: there’s no good reason why it should take tons of time, technical skills, big bucks, or friends in high places to publish a book. Or a zillion books, for that matter.

So we put our minds together, and developed a creative publishing service simple and smart enough to make anyone an author – every blogger, cook, photographer, parent, traveler, poet, pet owner, marketer, everyone. (This means you.)

Blurb offers all kinds of sizes and styles to make photo books which suit a variety of tastes and budgets. You can create a simple, classic book, or create one with all sorts of customization.

Since I like things simple, I opted to make a book with the Bookify Online Tool (there's a great option to test out the different book-making tools).

I selected a size and the "Clean and Simple" style, and once the tool launched, I was able to import my photos.

There are options to import photos from sites such as Picasa and Instagram, but I imported my photos from my computer.

The photos can automatically be added to your book in chronological order, or you can choose to drag and drop photos yourself.

You can change the layout, change background colors, or add borders and text, and it's really easy to change the order of photos.

After I got my photos in the order and positions I wanted them, I designed the cover and was able to preview the book before I ordered it.

I thought it was great that you're warned if the resolution for printing is too low, therefore you can resize the photo or choose to add another.

The only issue I had with the overall process was that I couldn't find an option to store photos. For example, I deleted the original book I made and wanted to start from scratch, but I could not find an option to drag and drop photos that were previously uploaded, so I uploaded my photos all over again.

Also, when I tried to make another new book that included a few of the photos of the book I ended up ordering, I couldn't find an option to pull up those photos, and once again I uploaded the photos all over again.

Perhaps there is that option to store photos in one central location on Blurb, but if there is, I just couldn't find it.

Despite that, the overall book-making process was really simple and quick, and once I received the photo book, I was VERY impressed.

The quality was great, and the photos were so nice and clear!

I know this is going to be a well-received gift!

If you want to create a special photo book for yourself or a loved one, visit Blurb, and right now you can save 20% by clicking here.

Get Ready for Kindergarten with Dinosaur Train - Dinosaurs A to Z Book Review

Musician just started Kindergarten last week, and he's still having a bit of a difficult time adjusting to his new class.  Many parents may have the same concerns when their child transitions to Kindergarten, but Dinosaur Train offers some great tips:
There are many things that can be done to help prepare children for this big transition and a familiarity with some key skills will be beneficial. The Jim Henson Company and PBS KIDS have included some fun ideas from the award-winning Dinosaur Train website at www.pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain that will help children familiarize themselves with and build upon some specific skills, while at the same time enjoying their favorite characters!
Practice reading and speaking. Help your child practice the letters of the alphabet while learning, speaking and singing about the diversity of dinosaurs that once lived on Earth with the “Dinosaurs A – Z song.” Have fun learning about letters, and dinosaurs at: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/handson/dinosaursatoz.html.
Learn about color. Help your child understand, investigate and make predictions about the science of color, using household basics including food coloring, clean food jars/containers, colored markers and a cookie sheet. For details go to: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/handson/colorfulhypothesis.html

Develop fine motor skills such as coloring; cutting; drawing; buttoning; zippering; building. With Buddy’s help, you can practice some of these skills while making a Stegosaurus Puppet, details at: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/artscraftscooking/stegosauruspuppet.html
Practice gross motor skills such as running, jumping and throwing. Try “Playing Dino Ball Your Way” to improve these skills--and get some exercise too--by inventing the rules for an imaginary game and then playing it! Details at: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/games/dinoball.html
Explore size and scale. Using illustrations and physical markers, kids can measure out size differences in large dinosaurs to understand their size and scale! Check out the activity “Even Bigger than T.rex!” at the following link and have some fun while learning about size: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/handson/biggerthantrex.html
Of course there are many other important skills for children to be familiar with before starting Kindergarten – these are just a few to have fun with, along with your friends from Dinosaur Train!
Dinosaur Train also offers many products to help with the transition, such as books and toys, and I was fortunate to receive the book Dinosaurs A to Z from Golden Books by Andrea Posner-Sanchez; illustrated by Terry Izumi.

Meet 26 dinosaurs—one for each letter of the alphabet—in this Dinosaur Train™ alphabet book. Buddy, Mr. Conductor, and the other Dinosaur Train™ characters from the hit PBS Kids® animated series introduce dinos from Apatosaurus to Zigongosaurus! Young paleontologists-in-training will love learning cool facts about 26 amazing dinosaurs. This awesome non-fiction book with a sturdy padded cover makes a great gift!

My boys really loved this book, and I personally was surprised at how many different dinosaurs there were!

The book is very colorful and informative, and I liked how there was a pronunciation guide to help us all pronounce the long names of the dinosaurs.

We all learned so much about dinosaurs through the Dinosaurs A to Z book, and I think this is a great book not only for Kindergartners, but for kids of all ages!

Shop: You can purchase Dinosaurs A to Z at various retailers online and nationwide (SRP $11.99)
