The Secret World of Arrietty premieres in the US on February 17, and I can't wait to see it, especially since it's based on the popular book "The Borrowers," and also because I love watching Japanese animated films!

Residing quietly beneath the floorboards are little people who live undetected in a secret world to be discovered, where the smallest may stand tallest of all. From the legendary Studio Ghibli (“Spirited Away,” “Ponyo”) comes “The Secret World of Arrietty,” an animated adventure based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series “The Borrowers.”

Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. The English language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom. The film hits theaters Feb. 17, 2012.

Marvel Studios announced today that they will be sponsoring a Global Twitter Chat on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 11 a.m. (PST) with cast members and the director of their highly anticipated action-adventure “Marvel’s The Avengers,” opening in theaters on May 4, 2012. Our entire family loves General Mills' Big G Cereal, especially Cheerios (even Baby loves munching on Cheerios!), and now several Big G cereals are marked with a white check, indicating whole grain is listed as their first ingredient, meaning there's more whole grain than any other ingredient!

Yes, I'm one of those who made a resolution to get healthier this new year.  One of the ways I'm trying to accomplish this is by watching the amount of calories I consume.

He loved the giraffe in the episode and was curious to see how Thomas would go under a bridge despite transporting a very tall giraffe.

The giraffe did eventually lie down with the help of Thomas' friends, but he wouldn't wake up, so Thomas had to figure out what to do, and he did!

Musician kept wanting to watch this episode, and after watching the DVD a second time, he ended up getting a foamie sticker giraffe and placed it on one of his Thomas toys to recreate the episode at home!


I personally liked the Big Belle episode.  It was all about how Belle tried too hard to be Toby's friend, but ultimately they did became friends once Belle realized she didn't need to try so hard, and all she had to do was listen to what her new friend was saying.

I often see this happen in real life - where people try too hard to be friends with someone, and they don't really take the time to listen or find out more about someone.

This episode taught a great lesson - about how it's important to listen and be yourself.

Curious Cargo delivered several great episodes and lessons, and I know Musician will keep watching it again and again, especially to see Thomas and the giraffe!

Mikey Wax has a new music video for his song Counting on You on YouTube right now.  I had never heard of Mikey Wax before, but after watching the video, I'm now a fan!  I think he has such a great voice, and I love the song too!

Musician loves anything to do with music (which is why he's nicknamed "Musician), so he had a blast playing Dr. Seuss Band.

As streams of colors came down the screen, he had to press the appropriate color, and he was pretty good at pressing the correct colors to play the songs (his favorite was ABCs).

Smiley, on the other hand, was a little slower in pressing the correct colors, however, his favorite thing to do was create crazy horns.  He'd change parts with a simple swipe and he'd always giggle at whatever he'd create.

However, the symptoms of Mickey’s autism soon set him apart from his teammates, leaving Murph to find a way to reach Mickey, and inspire his players to overcome their differences to reach a better place of understanding.

A Mile in His Shoes is an inspirational film that celebrates faith, determination and the power of friendship.

I was very eager to watch A Mile in His Shoes not only because Musician was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) last year (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified or PDD-NOS), but also because he just started playing baseball and recently had his first practice.

Mickey, one of the main characters in the movie, has Asperger's syndrome, which is different from PDD-NOS, but some of the characteristics that people diagnosed with either disorder are very similar, such as the sensitivity to loud noises and new environments, difficulty in comprehension and communicating, and difficulty adapting in social situations.

When Mickey would randomly tell his teammates how many bridges he passed or how many seams are in a baseball, or would get extremely upset over not being able to throw a knuckleball properly, it reminded me of how Musician would randomly state facts to us all the time, and how he'd get really upset in situations that others wouldn't normally find upsetting.  

What I really liked about the movie was how Coach Murph and several players did not let Mickey's disability get in the way of him performing to the best of his abilities.  Although they had to be flexible and find out the best way to communicate with Mickey since he would always take things literally, they treated him fairly and always encouraged him to try his best.

I also could relate to Mickey's parents, as they were apprehensive about letting him play baseball because of his Asperger's (I was wary about letting Musician play baseball, too), but they realized not only how good of a pitcher he was, but also how much he loved the game.

At the same time, I thought there were some parts of the movie that were a little questionable, such as Mickey's parents allowing him to leave with Coach Murph, a complete stranger.  I also thought the coach and team should have done some research into autism to find out the best way to approach Mickey and get him acclimated to baseball.

However, I do know that this movie is "entertainment," and also that this movie takes place decades ago and not as much was known back then about autism compared to now.

Despite those aspects of the movie that I had issues with, and the fact that the ending was too predictable, overall I thought the movie was very inspiring.

It gave me faith that Musician will be able to accomplish a lot in life, and that he'll also find great mentors and friends who will help guide him and encourage him in all of his endeavors (his current baseball coach is wonderful, and so far he's been doing okay at practice--no games yet!).

And hopefully this DVD will bring even more awareness to autism spectrum disorders, giving everyone, including those with an ASD and their families, hope for the future.

As I posted in my first review, when Smiley initially wore it, he cried and cried.  He eventually got used to it and wanted to wear it around the house all the time.

Unfortunately, while on our trip, once we got our rental car, he cried and cried again!

He eventually stopped, but I was quite surprised because we thought he had gotten used to the vest, but apparantley he still had some apprehensions about it.

I know it wasn't uncomfortable, it was simply because he wasn't used to wearing the vest.
