Mozart Interactive Free Mobile App Now Available

Put the power and playfulness of music in the palm of your child’s hand with Mozart Interactive, a whimsical, new, free mobile app for the iPad, iTouch and iPhone, available now from iTunes and the App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mozart-interactive/id499372535?mt=8)

Developed by Melody Street, creator of the innovative website
www.melodystreet.com, Mozart Interactive mobile app introduces children to a creative musical performance through cutting-edge technology that allows budding musicians to control where the story goes. Musical instruments come to life through fanciful, animated characters – each with their own distinctive personality and sound. It’s the perfect symphony of fun for kids of all ages.

Melody Street’s host, 10-year-old Ethan Bortnick, plays a duet of Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca with stringed pal Val Violin. The other characters – favorites Heidi Horn, Timmy Trumpet and Febe Flute – are eager to participate and keep interfering in the piece while Sammy Snare tries to keep control and get them off the stage in different, highly comical ways.

Viewers instantly become “conductors” of the story they’re watching, giving them the power to choose actions that control where the narrative takes them and ultimately affecting its outcome. With three different characters and four different sections of the piece to select from, kids can create a total of 81 unique videos to save and share with friends and family.

Orchestrate hours of musical amusement for your little composers by downloading Mozart Interactive today!

Mozart Interactive was created by Los Angeles-based Melody Street, LLC and technology pioneers Interlude (based in New York and Israel). Interlude’s patented technology platform allows consumers to create in real time a unique and dynamic version of a video that is based on pre-recorded audio and video segments. The result is a one-of-a-kind, sharable creation.

Previously Melody Street released an interactive video,

The Jellybeans: No Time for a Bad Day

Known as The Jellybeans, a group of girls from a small school in New Jersey recently released their second CD, No Time for a Bad Day.

The Jellybeans is a group of eleven girls from Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Jersey City, NJ. They began singing together in the third grade as part of the children's choir. By the fifth grade several of the girls were performing as a solo group outside of the choir and in the sixth grade they added a few more girls and became The Jellybeans.

While in the sixth grade, they recorded their first album, called 'Back in School,' as a fundraising project. The CD contained six songs from their school concerts. It was a low budget production, but it turned out surprisingly good and earned them quite a bit of attention...

The girls were also featured in an 'Artist Spotlight' by The Independent Music Awards (IMAs) in March of 2011 for their album of children's music. According to the IMAs, they are the youngest artists ever so featured, and their 'Back in School' album was accepted to Pandora Radio.

They recorded their second album, 'No Time For A Bad Day,' early in 2011 while in the seventh grade. It was released on September 8, 2011 to kick off their new school year and is very different from their first album.

Now in the eighth grade, The Jellybeans are working on their third album.

No Time for a Bad Day (Available on CD Baby-SRP $10 for the CD or $7 for MP3 download) is a CD full of fun and heartfelt songs that both kids and adults can enjoy.

You can preview the songs on the CD Baby website just as I did, and you'll find several age-appropriate songs that have no explicit lyrics or controversial subjects.  The songs are simply enjoyable and sincere.

It's Not Easy Doing What I Do is a song I'm sure many kids of all ages can relate to, and No Time for a Bad Day and One Perfect Moment In Time are sweet, feel-good songs.

There's also a really cute song, Say You Like Me, about young "like" (not "love," since, as they state on their website, they feel they're too young for "love,"), and you can listen to the entire track here.

I think the song has a great vibe to it - sort of a combination of doo-wop and pop.

After listening to just the song snippets, it seems as if the girls are wise beyond their years, but they still know how to have fun like any other kids their age.

It's so inspiring to see these young girls' music careers grow, and I'm sure the songs on their upcoming third CD will be reflective of their growth as both individuals and as a music group.

You can check out The Jellybeans on their website and on Facebook.

Morphology Review

DH and I love to play board games, and so do most of our friends.  But for a while now, we haven't bought any new games for ourselves or our friends simply because there weren't many options that seemed fresh and fun.

Until now.

We recently discovered an awesome new game - Morphology, and we can't remember the last time we had so much fun playing a board game!

Introducing Morphology – the game that sparks creativity & imagination and inspires all members of the family.

Morphology is a fun board game requiring players to dip into a goody bag full of string, wooden sticks, glass beads and colored cubes to create a designated object chosen from a deck of cards. Correctly guess the words your teammates build to be the first team to reach the Final Lily Pad. For more of a challenge, you may be asked to flex your creative muscles by closing your eyes, using your weaker hand, or only pick 5 objects to use while conjuring your given word. Each game includes 480 cards, 50 pieces of material, a timer, a die and team pieces.

Morphology is a total blast to play.

It's so much fun to see how each Morphologist (the builder of each word) creates each word, and it's neat to see how creative people can get!

So far we've only played the Easy words, and even many of the Easy words can be hard to do, depending on how you're required to build the word (e.g. with only 5 objects or closing your eyes).

Here is an example of an Easy word that was quickly guessed correctly.

Here is an example of an Easy word that DH had to create using the Pick 5 option (pick 5 pieces prior to looking at the card - in this case he ended up using only 3 of the 5 pieces he chose), and I could not guess what it was, but after seeing the word I thought he did a really great job!
I absolutely love Morphology.  It's great for family gatherings, parties with friends, team-building, classroom learning...the possibilities are endless!

And the ways you can play are endless as well.  You can simply follow the instructions that come with the game, or adjust them as you see fit.  For instance, sometimes when DH and I play with the boys we tweak the rules a little so it's easier for them to create and guess.

The only thing I wish was included with the game was some kind of board or mat (or multiple mini boards or mats) for the Morphologists to build on.

Despite that, I think Morphology is an awesome game!  It promotes creativity, fosters imagination, and is simply FUN!

Shop: Click here to purchase Morphology (SRP $29.99).

The Secret World of Arrietty Review - In Theaters Today, February 17!

The Secret World of Arrietty (Rated G) premieres in US theaters today, February 17, and I was fortunate to view an advance screening of the movie.

Residing quietly beneath the floorboards are little people who live undetected in a secret world to be discovered, where the smallest may stand tallest of all. From the legendary Studio Ghibli (“Spirited Away,” “Ponyo”) comes “The Secret World of Arrietty,” an animated adventure based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series “The Borrowers.”

Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. The English language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom.

Overall I thought The Secret World of Arrietty was a great movie which brought a popular story to life through Japanese animation, appealing to the imaginations of both children and adults.

DH and I enjoyed the movie, and as for my boys, they initially didn't seem too interested in the movie at first because they're more fond of the Disney Pixar movies, but as the story progressed, they became more and more engrossed in the movie and watched intently as Arrietty went on her adventures.

It didn't take long for us to be introduced to Arrietty - just a few minutes into the movie, Shawn caught a glimpse of Arrietty, at which time I heard numerous kids throughout the theater exclaim "There's Arrietty!" (Musician kept calling her "the princess").

Once the Borrowers were introduced, I couldn't help but identify with the relationships amongst them.

The mom, Homily (Poehler), was very humorous and her over-the-top reactions to various situations often drew big laughs. She was a huge worry-wart (almost as big of a worry-wart as I am!), whereas the dad, Pod (Arnett), balanced her out, as he was always very calm (just like how my husband is - always the calm one!).

In fact, Pod would show very little emotion, but despite his lack of emotional displays, he still was able to show Arrietty how much he loved her through his actions and conversations, and I thought it was so endearing to see how much Arrietty looked up to him and didn't want to let him down.

Below is one of my favorite clips from the movie, as it showed how eager Arrietty was to prove that she could borrow, and it was evident how excited she was to be borrowing with her dad.

Musician's favorite part of the movie was when the Borrowers thought an earthquake was taking place, but instead they were surprised with a very special addition to their home!

Throughout the movie it became obvious that the Borrowers were concerned about their existence, and Shawn had concerns about his own existence as well.  The age-old question of whether we simply accept fate or take destiny into our own hands comes into play.

Despite such deep, thought-provoking subject matter, there were many great moments of comic-relief throughout The Secret World of Arrietty that drew big laughs from both adults and kids!

Haru's (Burnett) actions during her attempts to prove the Borrowers' existence resulted in eruptions of laughter, and the introduction of Spiller (Moises Arias), another Borrower, resulted in huge laughs as well.

In addition to the many humorous moments, I also really liked the soundtrack, which I felt contributed to the overall fantasy of the movie.

I won't give away the ending, but I will say that what happens to the Borrowers, along with the numerous lessons taught throughout the movie as Shawn and Arrietty's friendship grew, provides for thoughtful discussion between parent and child, and I think those kinds of movies - where people of all ages engage in discussions after the movie, are the best kinds of movies!

The Secret World of Arrietty opens today in theaters nationwide.

Thank you to the sponsor for providing tickets to the advance screening of the movie.  I received no monetary compensation for this post.

Guinevere: Crazy Crazy Prize Pack Giveaway

Guinevere is a dark pop diva with the soul of an admitted Star Trek fan and gaming geek, an expert Call of Duty player who often surprises her online male competitors when she reveals her true identity. Named after the legendary Lady of the Round Table, who stepped out on King Arthur for his best friend Sir Lancelot, the Toronto native also plays ice hockey and counts some of the NHL’s best as the biggest fans of her music.

The 20-year-old singer-songwriter’s debut solo album for her own Nuke Town Records—a nod to Call of Duty, naturally—shows off a unique ability to take the stage and make it her own, transforming from the self-described “shy, polite” girl next door into a larger-than-life pop icon—like Clark Kent rushing into a phone booth to turn into Superman, or woman as the case may be—mixing her beloved classic rock with the most up-to-date dance-floor beats.

“I was definitely born in the wrong era,” explains the real-life Gwendolyn Lewis, who made her performing debut at a second grade talent show singing the Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl,” getting turned on to Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Black Sabbath and her idol Stevie Nicks by her dad growing up. “Music has always been in my life. I keep gravitating to it, and there’s no avoiding it now.”

The Hunger Games - In Theaters March 23

I've been reading and hearing so much about The Hunger Games lately, and I know many people can't wait for the movie to be released next month on March 23!

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 23.5 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. It has spent more than 160 consecutive weeks/more than three consecutive years to date on The New York Times bestseller list since its publication in September 2008, and has also appeared consistently on USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

If you haven't read the book yet (I admit - I haven't!), you can preview the first two chapters on The Hunger Games Movie Facebook Page by clicking on the Read the Book tab.

You can also download a couple of discussion guides below, perfect for your family, a group of friends, or a book club.

It's just a few more weeks until The Hunger Games is released until theaters, and until then, you can check out a new trailer below.

Scrubbing Bubbles Dirty Work Index Survey and Prize Pack Giveaway

The role men play inside the home has certainly started to evolve compared to 30 years ago, and most men seem to be stepping up to help with household chores. But, is it enough and are they given credit for their efforts by their female counterparts? Apparently not. The makers of Scrubbing Bubbles® released today the second annual Dirty Work Index™ survey, and found when it comes to cleaning, women still play the dominant role and in fact, may not be ready to share the spotlight even though they want more help. As a result, Scrubbing Bubbles® has partnered with John Gray, best-selling author of “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus,” to engage couples in a healthy discussion to try to resolve the age-old household chore debate, bringing harmony to the home.

The Down and Dirty Facts
The second annual Dirty Work Index™ survey found that when it comes to cleaning, women think they do it all. In fact, 58 percent of women say it’s their “job” to clean, and a quarter (25 percent) of all women feels as if they are the cleaning “leader” in their homes. Conversely, more than half of women confided that they want more overall help from their partner or spouse, but 38 percent don’t trust them to meet their standards of cleanliness.

Manning Up
The survey revealed that men are helping around the house, however they aren’t given credit when credit’s due. Interestingly, 45 percent of men surveyed say it’s their job to clean and contribute to the household accordingly. More surprisingly, nearly 75 percent of men claim to clean to make their spouse or partner happy – demonstrating they do care about helping out and are picking up the slack.

“Women’s and men’s roles outside the home have definitely evolved, but the Dirty Work Index™ survey results indicate that we need to make more of an effort to make changes inside the home, too,” says Gray, whose bestselling book “Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. “It’s important to take a closer look at things like household tasks to determine what’s working – and what’s not.”

Gray Helps Couples Tackle the Chore War
From February 2012 through June 2012, John Gray will be offering tips and advice to couples on how to conquer household chores and create more harmony at home. By visiting Scrubby Solution’s Facebook tab families can share their roles, responsibilities and tips for getting it all done. Additionally, they can participate in a Q&A session with John Gray, take a cleaning personality quiz complete with product recommendations and cleaning solutions, and read more surprising data from the Scrubbing Bubbles® Dirty Work Index™ survey.

Cleaning for the 21st Century: A Balancing Act
The foundation of a family begins at home so managing home life – including cleaning – is essential to families’ happiness. How families deal with household chores either strengthens the partnership or creates a divide. Gray offers this advice for creating the best atmosphere at home:

1. Define the roles: It’s important to identify all the household chores and discuss who will have ownership of each.
2. Discuss expectations: The results showed that women don’t trust men to meet their standards of clean. Gray recommends that women actually show men how they want the house cleaned and that couples discuss what clean means to each of them.
3. Look for time-saving cleaning tools: Stock your home with cleaning products that are easy to use and efficient. For example, use Scrubbing Bubbles® Automatic Shower Cleaner and Scrubbing Bubbles® One Step Toilet Bowl Cleaner. These products make the tough tasks easier so anyone in the family can help clean.
4. Remember to say thank you: Whether or not the bathroom shines the way you want, don’t forget to say thank you for making the effort.

Win: One lucky winner will receive a Scrubbing Bubbles Prize Pack which includes the Automatic Shower Cleaner and One Step Toilet Bowl Cleaner.

Dr. Seuss Beginner Book Collection #1 iPad App Review

I love hearing Musician read, and I love it when he gets really excited as he reads, as was the case when he read The Cat in the Hat from the Dr. Seuss Beginner Book Collection #1 App from Oceanhouse Media.

The Dr. Seuss Beginner Book Collection #1 contains five exciting Dr. Seuss titles for young readers. Enjoy The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, The FOOT Book, Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? and Fox In Socks all in one omBook!

Can you believe I had never read The Cat in the Hat before?  I've read several other Dr. Seuss books, but I had no idea what the story was about until Musician read it to me via the Dr. Seuss Beginner Book Collection #1 App.

He was really interested to see all the items the Cat in the Hat could balance on himself, such as the fishbowl, the rake, the cake, the books, and so much more!

He also thought it was a bit funny how messy everything became.

At the end of the story, when asked  "what would you do if your mother asked you?" what you did today, he said "Say sorry!"

I thought that was such a cute answer!

Musician's favorite story in the series is Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?  It's his favorite Dr. Seuss book!

Smiley really loves the app too.  He's heard so many of the stories several times already, so he knows parts of each story by heart.  He's able to learn a lot of new words simply by touching them on screen and hearing the word being pronounced.

Dr. Seuss books are a delight to read at any age, and being able to bring words to life through the Dr. Seuss Beginning Book Collection #1 makes daily story-time a whole lot of fun!

We can't wait to see what books are featured in Collection #2!

Shop: You can purchase a download of the Dr. Seuss Beginner Book Collection #1 from the iTunes App Store (SRP $11.99).
