The Pirates! Band of Misfits Movie Review

In The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Hugh Grant stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!

The Pirates! Band of Misfits was an entertaining stop-motion animation film that our entire family enjoyed.

We're introduced to a pirate crew full of amusing characters, led by the Pirate Captain, who yearns to one day be Pirate of the Year.

Unfortunately, Pirate Captain is not a very good pirate at all - he can't even steal booty!

However, he does not give up, and during his quest to achieve the somewhat unattainable goal of Pirate of the Year, he and his crew end up on a zany and dangerous journey in which they meet Charles Darwin, Mister Bobo (a Man-panzee), and Queen Victoria.

The Captain will stop at nothing to become Pirate of the Year, and despite always getting sensible advice from Pirate with a Scarf (whom he refers to as Number 2), he ends up doing the unthinkable simply to obtain what it takes to win the coveted award.

And to the astonishment of many, he actually wins the award, but it is soon stripped away because of a technicality, and he realizes he must right the wrongs that resulted in him being left with nothing.

Eventually Captain realizes that he doesn't need to be Pirate of the Year, nor does he need a lot of loot, in order to be a happy, fulfilled pirate.

The Pirates! was very amusing - there were many comedic scenes, and Smiley's favorite part of the movie was when the Pirate Captain was trying to rescue Polly, his "big-boned parrot," from Queen Victoria, who was in a hot-air balloon.  He kept rooting for the Pirate Captain and was hoping he and his bird wouldn't get hurt!

Musician's favorite part of the movie was when the pirate crew ended up in a wild ride in a bathtub!

Not only was The Pirates! highly entertaining, but it was also actually quite educational as well, as we learned a lot about nature and science (such as what happens when you combine vinegar with baking soda).

In terms of the 3D - I personally didn't think the 3D effects were that outstanding, but I know my boys thought the effects were pretty cool (Smiley got really scared during a few fight scenes).

As for the characters, they were all special and quirky in their own way, and my personal favorite was the Pirate Captain.  Hugh Grant is one of my favorite actors and he really made the Pirate Captain endearing and fun to watch.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits definitely had us "laughing our booty off" in some scenes, and overall it's an enjoyable and entertaining family film.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits opens today, April 27, in theaters nationwide.

Thank you to the sponsor for providing tickets to the advance screening.  I received no monetary compensation for this post.

Rurally Screwed by Jessie Knadler Giveaway

RURALLY SCREWED: My Life Off the Grid with the Cowboy I Love is the true story of a woman who ditches everything she’s ever known and wanted— job security, money, her professional network, access to decent Thai food— to live off the grid with her true love (and dogs and horses and chickens). Is it worth it? The answer comes amid war, bible clubs, and moonshine.

Author Jessie Knadler was a New York City girl, through and through. An editor for a splashy women’s magazine, she splurged on Miu Miu, partied hard, and dated a man-boy whose complexion was creamier than her own. Circling the drain both professionally and personally, Jessie definitely wouldn’t have described herself as “happy;” more like caustically content. Until one day she was assigned a story about an annual rodeo in the badlands of Eastern Montana, and her life would never be the same. On that fateful assignment in Montana, Knadler meets a bullrider named Jake. He voted Republican and read Commercial Truck Trader. He listened to Garth Brooks, and he owns guns. And Jessie suddenly found herself blindsided by something with which she was painfully unfamiliar: a genuinely lovable disposition. In fact, Jake radiated such optimism and old-school gentlemanliness that Jessie is completely swept off her feet, ditching Manhattan for an authentic experience with an authentic man, moving to a chicken farm in Virginia.

Inspired by Knadler’s blog of the same name, RURALLY SCREWED tackles both the day-to-day issues in Knadler’s life and the larger ones, including raising their daughter while Jake serves his country in Afghanistan (Jake returned last week).

Knadler is a writer whose articles have appeared in publications ranging from the Wall Street Journal to Glamour. She is the co-author of the preserving cookbook Tart and Sweet. Her blog, RurallyScrewed.com, has been featured in Newsweek, French Elle and Jezebel.com. She lives with her husband, daughter, and a bunch of chickens in Lexington, Virginia. Visit her website at
www.jessieknadler.com, and blog at www.rurallyscrewed.com.
Shop: You can purchase Rurally Screwed at various retailers online and nationwide (SRP $24.95).

Win: One lucky winner will receive a copy of Rurally Screwed!

Hallmark Mother's Day Gifts Review and Moment in Time Gift Pack Giveaway

This Mother’s Day, Hallmark introduces gifts and cards that give Moms and Grandmas a moment in time — a moment they can hold onto and revisit even when their little ones aren’t so little anymore. Hallmark’s Mother’s Day Moment in Time gift pack includes a variety of gifts and cards that capture a child’s personality and help celebrate moms and mother figures on Mother’s Day and beyond.

· Kids have drawn pictures for moms for years, but Hallmark’s Recordable Artwork Canvas Art Kit takes a Mother’s Day drawing to the next level by capturing a child’s voice and the story behind his or her artwork. Equipped with a canvas panel, Crayola washable paints and a big imagination, kids can paint mom or grandma a masterpiece that is then inserted into a 9”x9” recordable frame.
· For a unique and final touch, kids record a 40-second special Mother’s Day message into the frame and share their unique story behind their art. With the Canvas Art Kit, a mom can play back her child’s precious little voice and experience his or her big imagination on Mother’s Day and any day.
· Available at Hallmark Gold Crown stores and anywhere Hallmark products are sold for $14.95.
· Filled with open-ended questions that spark imaginative answers, “Mom and Me” and “Grandma and Me” Recordable Books capture the answers only a kid can give.
· Within the book, kids record themselves answering a variety of questions, such as “If you and mom were aliens, what would you look like and what would you name your planet?” Or, “What does Mom do to show she loves you?”
· Conversations to Keep: Recordable Books give Mom or Grandma a fun and easy way to capture the true personalities of her (grand) children so she can always remember that little voice and their time.
Mother’s Day Greetings (A variety of 3 Mother’s Day cards)
  • Hallmark is taking Mother’s Day cards to a new level with a variety of innovations, including light and animation, as well as pop-ups with mechanics so complex that a card designer works with a Hallmark paper engineer to design and construct it.
I was fortunate to receive a gift pack from Hallmark with all of the above-mentioned items.

The Hallmark's Mother's Day gifts are, as expected, innovative and touching at the same time.  Any of the items would bring a smile to a mother's face, but my personal favorite is the Conversations to Keep: Recordable Book.

I recorded my conversations with Smiley, and it was so cute to see him think of answers to say whenever I asked him questions, and some of the answers he gave were quite surprising!

What a way to be able to capture sweet, innocent conversations between you and your child.  It would make such a treasured gift that you can revisit year after year after year, reflecting (and laughing) at the answers and just cherishing such special conversations between you and your child.

For more information on these and other wonderful Mother's Day gifts, visit Hallmark.com.

Win: One lucky winner will receive a Hallmark Mother's Day Moment in Time Gift Pack which includes the following: Recordable Artwork: Canvas Art Kit, Conversations to Keep: Recordable Storybook, and a sampler of 3 Mother's Day Greeting Cards.

Disneynature's Chimpanzee Review

Disneynature takes moviegoers deep into the forests of Africa with “Chimpanzee,” a new True-Life Adventure introducing an adorable young chimp named Oscar and his entertaining approach to life in a remarkable story of family bonds and individual triumph. Oscar’s playful curiosity and zest for discovery showcase the intelligence and ingenuity of some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom. Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family—including his mom, Isha, and the group’s savvy leader, Freddy — navigates the complex territory of the forest.

The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimps, who’d rather make mayhem than join their parents for an afternoon nap. But when Oscar’s family is confronted by a rival band of chimps, he is left to fend for himself until a surprising ally steps in and changes his life forever.

When I hear the word "Disney," the first word that comes to mind is magic, and that's exactly what Disneynature's Chimpanzee is - magic.

Magic in the sense that the film reveals that magic can take place anytime, anywhere, when you least expect it, just as it happened during the filming of Chimpanzee, which is narrated by Tim Allen.

In the movie, we're introduced to a group of chimpanzees, which include Oscar, the adorable star of the film, Isha, his mom, and Freddy, the group's alpha male leader.

We watch as Oscar grows and learns how to do things he needs to survive, such as climb trees, forage for food, and crack open nuts.

We learn so many facts about Oscar and the other chimpanzees (it was so interesting to discover what kind of meat they consume!), but we also learn a lot about the African forest they live in, as well as other creatures that call the forest home.

In the forest the chimpanzees face many dangers, not only from predators, but also from rival chimpanzees, with which they battle over territory for food.

After one such battle with a rival group of chimps, Isha becomes hurt and eventually does not survive, leaving Oscar to fend for himself.

***Spoiler alert*** -- if you've seen the Chimpanzee trailer or watched any of the other Chimpanzee videos online, it's obvious who becomes Oscar's new parental figure, but if you haven't seen the trailer or any of the videos you may not want to read further.

He struggles to find food and his demise seems inevitable, but then the magic happens - the least powerful chimp, Oscar, is "adopted" by the most powerful chimp, Freddy.

The bond that is created between the two chimps is beyond what anyone ever expected to happen, and with Freddy's help, Oscar is able to thrive and grow.

Although there were a few skin-crawling scenes (think thousands - possibly millions of ants), and a few battles that startled Smiley, our entire family enjoyed the movie, especially the many lighthearted and humorous moments. Watching some of the chimps try to crack open nuts with rocks and branches was amusing, and watching them "play" with their food while chewing drew lots of laughs (Smiley loved watching how the chimps would eat their food - he kept saying "good eating!").

I thought Tim Allen was an interesting choice as narrator - he did a nice job, and his little reference to Home Improvement was quite funny.

Although I thought the film would focus a lot more on the bond between Freddy and Oscar, I found the movie very engrossing, as well as visually stunning and highly educational.

After the movie ends, be sure to stay back to see extra clips of the chimps and to see a bit of what the crew endured to document Oscar's journey.

Chimpanzee is a wonderful family movie.  It touches upon so many subjects in a single movie, including perseverance, resourcefulness, and compassion, and it simply showcases and captures nature's beauty in a way that only Disney can.

Chimpanzee opens in theaters nationwide today, April 20, and if you purchase tickets during opening week (through April 26), Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute to protect wild chimpanzees.

Little Angels Prize Pack Giveaway Giveaway

Discover the joy of learning and friendship  with Roma Downey’s Little Angels! After a successful debut on February 14, the first three volumes of the educational DVD series, LITTLE ANGELS ABC’s, LITTLE ANGELS ANIMALS, and LITTLE ANGELS 1,2,3’s, proved to be a hit with children and parents alike, providing fresh, fun and inspiring lessons the whole family could enjoy.

Roma Downey stated, "For many years I had the privilege of playing an angel on television, bringing a message of God's love to millions of Americans. As a mother, I have longed to be part of a project that would help to bring that same message to children by not only teaching them the foundations of education - but also providing strong examples of good behavior. Little Angels does just that. It offers critical learning skills through the lens of timeless and age appropriate Bible stories. I only wish this series had been available when my kids were younger!"

LITTLE ANGELS is an animated DVD series and has been created for pre-school aged children to teach practical learning skills like ABCs and numbers. The series is presented in a captivating and entertaining format that will help parents to teach their little angels a big love of learning while also providing hours of fun to enjoy together with exciting DVD extras.

Pre-school twins Alex and Zoe are blessed to have eight Little Angels watching over them – literally! These Little Angels live on the ceiling of their bedroom, painted there so they are the first things the kids see when they wake up in the morning and the last thing they see before they fall asleep at night. The angels come to life when the children need them most, helping guide them through the challenges of their young lives.

Featuring a great deal of interactive DVD extras including charming music videos and downloadable activity sheets, plus a downloadable bonus digital copy of each lesson that will allow for learning on the go, the LITTLE ANGELS ABC’s, LITTLE ANGELS ANIMALS, and LITTLE ANGELS 1, 2, 3’s DVDs are a great value moms can feel good about sharing with their little angels.

The Little Angels DVD series is an important part of a whole new franchise of fun, inspiring and educational products including CDs, books, apparel and App.

Shop: You can purchase Little Angels DVD at Walmart.com (SRP 14.98 each).

Win: One lucky winner will receive a Little Angels Prize Pack which consists of the DVDs LITTLE ANGELS ABC’s, LITTLE ANGELS ANIMALS, and LITTLE ANGELS 1,2,3’s, along with activity sheets, and popcorn!
