After seeing how beneficial enzymes have been for my son, I knew Digest Gold + Probiotics could be beneficial for me as well.

And so far, so good!

Although initially I didn't like the taste or smell of the capsule, it's been at least two weeks since I first took Digest Gold + Probiotics, and I'm no medical professional, but the enzymes seem to be doing their job, as I have not have any digestive issues since.

Yes, it could be just a coincidence, and I'm only taking just 1 capsule per day instead of the 1 per meal (total of 3) per day (I wanted to ease into it and watch for any allergic reactions), but overall I have had no issues with the enzymes themselves, and the fact that each capsule contains enzymes AND probiotics is a big plus (love that I don't need to take probiotics separately).

Doctor’s 5 Tips Avoid Getting Sick Over Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day is around the corner and families are planning their last minute vacations and day trips. The last thing you want is for your kid to get sick when they are supposed to be enjoying themselves during this holiday weekend. Plus, if your kid gets sick it’s more likely you and others in your family will get sick too. Dr. Yael Halaas, an ear nose and throat (ENT) doctor in the NYC area, came up with these great tips on how to avoid getting sick over Labor Day weekend. 

1. Sanitize everything!

One of the first ways to ruin a vacation together is catching a cold on the plane. Carry antibacterial wipes and wipe down every surface you may touch on the plane. Wipe the belt buckle, food tray and latch, volume control, and armrests. The airline crew cannot clean all these surfaces between flights which can harbor contagious viruses and bacteria.

2. Wash your hands

Wash your hands especially before touching your own or a loved one’s eyes, nose or mouth. When traveling, it is impossible to avoid contact with surfaces that many others may have touched. To avoid those bugs contaminating your family, wash your hands.

3. Be proactive

On family vacations with everyone close together, take Cold-EEZE at the first sign of a cold to shorten the duration, minimizing the amount of time you are sick to better enjoy your vacation. Cold-EEZE zinc lozenges have been found to decrease the duration of colds by nearly half in studies by Dartmouth Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic. Also, by shortening your cold, it minimizes the chances of spreading the cold onto your family members.

4. Be prepared

Carry medications with you to minimize the impact of a cold or illness so you can all still enjoy your trip. Useful medications include analgesia like Tylenol or allergy medications for adults and children. Adults may also want to have some decongestants handy just in case.

5. Be healthy

Good hydration, good nutrition and exercise go a long way to giving the body the support it needs to stay strong.

There needs to be more emphasis on building up and expanding the skills a child is good at. They may be talented in one area and have a real deficiency in another.

Hallmark Text Bands Review and Giveaway

My boys have been playing with a really cool gadget the past few days - Hallmark Text Bands!

Hallmark Text Bands are a cool, brand-new way for kids to let friends know what’s on their mind. Text Bands allow kids to send text messages wristband to wristband, expressing themselves and spreading encouragement in a fun, new way. How? Entering a message on the Text Band is really easy.  Smiley simply wanted to type the word "Cat," whereas Musician wanted to type the word Ka-Chow (he's a huge Lightning McQueen fan).

Once their messages were set up, they thought it was super cool how the messages would appear on their bands whenever they bumped fists.  Once in a while the messages would not transfer, but all they had to do was keep bumping fists again until they were able to swap messages. 

The Text Bands offer a fun way to send and receive messages, and I like how it helps my kids learn how to spell different words. 

Each Text Band can store up to 24 messages, and I love how there's a "bad-word" filter, as Text Bands encourage positive communication and interaction amongst users.

ParaNorman Review - In Theaters Today, August 17

Last night our family attended a screening of ParaNorman 3D.

I expected it to be a pretty good movie with cool stop-motion animation effects.

What I didn't expect was for it to be a GREAT movie with a GREAT storyline that I would enjoy so much (even DH thought it was such a great movie that he boldly predicted it would be nominated for and win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature!)

The new 3D stop-motion comedy thriller from animation company LAIKA, reteams the company with Focus Features after the groundbreaking Academy Award-nominated “Coraline.” “ParaNorman” is, following “Coraline,” the company’s second stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3D. In “ParaNorman,” a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst, of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

Norman's special ability to speak to the dead is evident from the beginning of the movie.  Unfortunately, this talent gets him disapproving comments from his parents and sister, and it also gets him into trouble at school, as he often becomes the target of bullying (a prevalent theme throughout the movie)..

However, he finds a friend in Neil, a classmate who often finds himself the target of bullying as well.

Neil sticks by Norman not only through the bullying, but also through his crazy adventure of trying to stop a witch's ghost and zombies from taking over the town.

Norman's uncle, Mr. Prenderghast, tells him what needs to be done to stop the chaos, but Norman soon finds out there's more to the story of the witch and the zombies.

When Norman discovers who the witch really was, he eventually realizes what needs to be done to stop her from destroying everything, and the witch's spirit is finally able to rest in peace.

The stop-motion animation in ParaNorman is awesome, and I loved how there were many, many funny moments in ParaNorman.  Kids will find themselves laughing a lot, but adults will find themselves laughing even more (there was a quite a bit of adult humor).

I also really loved the storyline in ParaNorman.  It's about so much more than a boy who can see and talk to the dead who has to save his town.  It's about why people do things when they fear something, about how hurting people who hurt you is never the answer, and about accepting people who are different.

A lot of my friends who heard about ParaNorman commented on how they think their kids would be too scared to watch this movie, and although I thought there were a few parts that may be really scary for little kids, overall the scary parts were more funny than scary, and my 5- and 3-year old did not get scared throughout the movie at all.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good ParaNorman was - awesome stop-motion animation, lots of humor, and a great storyline.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green Review - In Theaters Today, August 15

Last night I had a chance to watch a screening of The Odd Life of Timothy Green, and it turned out to be one of the best movies I've seen all year (caution - this review contains some spoilers).

Academy Award®–nominated director/writer Peter Hedges (“Dan in Real Life,” What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”) brings enchantment to the screen with “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” an inspiring, magical story about a happily married couple, Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton), who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When young Timothy (CJ Adams) shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, Cindy and Jim—and their small town of Stanleyville—learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts.

I loved The Odd Life of Timothy Green.  The movie was a nice mixture of humor, sadness, and joy, and I thought it did a great job in using an inexplicable event to teach lessons of hope and love.

When Timothy pops up into Cindy and Jim's life, he is everything they dreamed him to be, but there's one big, noticeable difference - he has leaves growing from his legs.

Cindy and Jim do everything they can to ensure that no one sees his legs, since people can be cruel to those who are different, so they make him wear socks at all times.

Not only do Cindy and Jim try to protect their new son from anyone who could possibly hurt him, they also try their best to give him the perfect childhood.

But his childhood is far from perfect. 

Throughout the movie we watch Timothy experience the ups and downs of life. 

Unfortunately, his odd life also turns out to be a short life, but even after he's gone, he leaves behind gifts - both tangible (his leaves that have fallen off of his legs) and intangible (lessons of love, hope, and never giving up on a dream).

I thought Garner was endearing as Timothy's mother, and I also thought Adams did a fantastic job as Timothy, a boy who looked at life innocently and honestly.

Personally, this movie really touched me because it reminded me of Musician in so many ways.  His Autism Spectrum Disorder makes him different from his friends and most other kids in his class, but my husband and I try our hardest to have him live as normal of a life as possible by letting him experience as much as he can through sports, travel, school, and everyday life. 

And almost every day, he surprises us with a new thought or perspective on things, and for him to be able to share that with us is a gift in itself.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green truly is one of my favorite films of the year.

My class reunion is coming up next year (I won't say which one, but it's greater than 10, LOL!).  I'm not on any committees, but I've volunteered to help with a few things, and right now we're in the planning stages.

One of the things we're trying to decide on is venue.  In Hawaii, it's popular for many classes to have a reunion in Las Vegas (since after all, Vegas is considered the "ninth island), and a lot of classmates have actually settled down in Vegas, so Vegas is a real possibility.  But we're also looking at a family picnic, and an informal gathering of some sort (dinner, cruise, club, etc.).

Logo Garden Review and Giveaway

As most of you know, I have another blog that focuses on Hawaii and travel, and thanks to Logo Garden, I was able to design a new logo and business cards specifically for that site.

Anyone can easily create a logo - for FREE on Logo Garden.

You can even create a website - for FREE!

To begin designing your logo, first you select an industry and you'll be presented with hundreds of logos.  For me, choosing a logo was the most difficult part simply because there are so many!

Once you pick your industry, you can search by keyword or look for letter or abstract symbols.  You can also change the color of the symbols based on your preference.

After you select your symbol, you then go to a screen where you'll add your company's name, and you can also add special effects to your symbol.

When you're done completing your logo, you'll be sent to your webpage.  I didn't set up a webpage so I'm not sure how the webpage process works, but I did create business cards ($19.99 for 100 cards).

Creating the business cards was also very simple.  After choosing one of several layouts (I chose a clean and simple design), I added my information, re-sized the logo or fonts where applicable, and I was done!

I do wish there were more font options and business card layout templates, but overall the entire experience of creating my logo design and business cards was very quick and easy (if any time you have trouble creating your logo, look for the little video camera icon for assistance).
